The reason Temple and Pitt are out is because they aren't guaranteed wins. PSU can survive a loss to Auburn, but not a loss to a mid-major like Pitt or Temple.

The ACC is often better than the Big Ten, so yeah mid-major.

Maybe you've heard of Franklin's record against Pitt and Temple 1-1. I'm not comparing the programs, just saying there is nothing to gain from beating teams like Pitt and Temple but everything to lose of you don't.

And as far a Pitt being in the ACC, every conference has bottom feeders.

Well, Penn State’s only Big Ten title in years was 2016 and they couldn’t even beat Pitt. So maybe that title wasn’t really worth anything. Might have been comparable to winning Conference USA.

So every conference has bottome feeders, and some conferences are bottom feeders themselves.

But had Penn State defeated Pitt in 2016, they would have made the CFP. So seems like there a lot to gain from beating Pitt.

Both losses to Pitt and Temple were on the road to really good teams. Temple’s team the year that they beat PSU finished ranked and won the AAC. They also went toe to toe with Notre Dame that season, as well.

Pitt’s 2016 team was very good. Heck they beat the National Champion on the road and a team that played in the Rose Bowl.  I think that is the best team I’ve seen at Pitt this millennium.

The problem is perception. A win over an 8-4 Auburn or VT is perceived as a better win than over an 8-4 Pitt team. Though that doesn’t make logical sense, it is reality and one of the major flaws with the CFB system.

As much as we'd love to see the big boys matchup week after week the reality of it is if u schedule more than 1 power 5 out of conference game ur crazy. Since the B1G went to 9 conference games nobody playing more than 1 and Wisconsin didn't play any.

There's no benefit to play two power five teams with an 8 or 9 game conference schedule.   We saw Washington make the final four two years ago with a terrible Rutgers team as their only power five non-con game.  It simply doesn't matter playing big games, that's basically the proof.

Penn State won't gain anything by playing Auburn in all actuality. It's an intriguing game, nothing more. If PSU  has a playoff caliber team and is ranked in the top 12  preseason and goes 11-1 or 12-0, it doesn't really matter who is on the schedule.   If they go to an 8 game playoff, it'll matter even less.

I want Pitt to play either WVU/PSU every year, and 3 cupcakes.  On certain years you play WVU/PSU AND Notre Dame and two cupcakes.  So basically Notre Dame is the only exception, because those matchups are arranged by the conference.

Pitt playing Oklahoma State these past 2 years have been total wastes of time.  It cost Pitt a bowl this past year, and a 9 win season 2 years ago.
