Re: Coaching Carousel

It is very difficult for anyone to win at Altoona. The people there still believe that they are back in the 1960s when they had Mike Reid and John Ebersole and 10,000 people packed Mansion Park for home games. They still recall the battles with national powers like Massillon, Ohio, and think that is...

Commentary on public, non boundary-boundary dispute

July 19, 2018 PIAA trying to remain relevant in boundary-non boundary dispute: Its “Hail Mary” pass falls incomplete as superintendents will accept nothing less than their full proposal on the playoffs.  http://hce1947.blogspot.com/2018/07/piaa-trying-to-remain-relevant-its-hail.html July 12, 2018 ...

Public [boundary]-Private [non-boundary] athletic battles heat up in 2018

First of a three-part series. Issue: Quest is a level playing field where every high school athlete has a fair chance of competing. The problem is 46 years old and will require legislative action, which is possible this year. It is not a religious issue, but is an issue of fundamental fairness. The...

Re: PC Head Football Coach

There is about a zero percent chance of John Franco taking that job. Perhaps Tyrone and PC are the same size, but the analogy stops there. Penn Cambria has struggled since its inception with animus. Where else was a school board jailed overnight except at PC? Yes, that was Joe O'Kicki, but the anger...

Why can't D6 boys basketball teams win state titles?

… but girls teams can.

I have no answer, but I would like to hear theories about it.

I tried to put together the numbers on this, and the girls definitely win big.

Re: PIAA Girls Basketball State Semifinals

I call that JV crowd analogous to Hoosiers, where local communities join and support their one team. With the private schools, that community is smaller and smaller today and it is more diverse. They used to have large crowds, but when you have only 200 students, there is not much of a community, ev...

Losing young athletes: Parents grief from Portage's Vinnie Michaels to North Star's Nick Roberts

When a young athlete dies, we all feel a pit in our stomach. Why do they go so young, with so much promise, so much potential in life.  Nick Roberts had a great wrestling career, but he passed at the age of 23. Vinnie Michaels was an athlete from Portage who was an outstanding running back in the mi...

Re: Classification of Private Schools

I agree that if you want to improve attendance, move away from Hershey. There is much better interest in Philly or Pittsburgh. The downside of that is that traveling is more of a burden, but if you rotate between the two cities, that should even out some. They would be better doing that with footbal...

Re: Classification of Private Schools

This goes back to the 1977 or 78 law passed by the Pa. legislature in which private schools were required to be members of the PIAA. If you want to change the public/private rules and improve the classification, that rule should be repealed. Good luck with that. The state legislature is not exactly ...
