Local colleges

Postby knowitall » June 3rd, 2018, 8:45 am

Bishop McCort has an ad in today’s Trib announcing its graduation class and its post graduation plans.  Most of its students are continuing on to college.  I took interest in where they are going and not going.

15 students will attend UPJ, six Pitt, six IUP, four Slippery Rock, three Penn State and three WVU.  At least two students have chosen to attend Ohio State, Kent State and Shippensburg.

Seven students will attend Duquesne.  What I found particularly interesting is that only two students chose to attend St. Francis and Mt. Aloysius while only one chose to attend Seton Hill and no one chose to attend St. Vincent.  That can’t be good news for the admission departments at those four Catholic colleges located within an hour’s drive of Johnstown.

sign of the times.  In 20 years there may no longer be Catholic high schools in Johnstown, Ebensburg, or Greensburg

BM will graduate about 80 not counting the Wus, Chus, Zhus and Lius.

Having only 5 of those grads attending the local Catholic colleges has me slightly more concerned about them than BM or GCC.

The question is, why are BM students not CHOOSING the four local Catholic colleges? The price difference between public and private college tuition is night and day. It's a small fortune to attend these colleges for 4 years. And this doesn't include any post-graduate college education.

Most recent tuitions (per year) for Duquesne, St. Francis, St.Vincent, Mt. Aloysius
...Duquesne 36,394
...St. Francis 33,856
...St.Vincent 34,520
...Mt. Aloysius 223,10
...If you're gonna stay there, at another $10,000 at least.

You can become a teacher at IUP for $10,500 per year. Or you can become a teacher at Duquesne for $36,000 per year. So for one year at Duquesne for can get almost 4 years at IUP. And when you consider that it's $28,000 for 4 years at BM, no wonder freshman college kids are avoiding Catholic colleges.

The more surprising thing to me is the two kids going to Auburn.
