Central Cambria boys and girls basketball teams both lost in the PIAA playoffs to private school teams. I've said before that I agree with any fair resolution for everyone in regards to competition, but this just looks like a school who lost crying because they did just that, lost. The classification thing is a mute point right now because we just changed classifications. You can't draw conclusions by citing classification until you let the new 6 classification system run its course a few years. I mean, if you want to send a letter good for you, but a school in their position and situation, as well as the argument they make with classifications, is not going to be taken seriously. Get all of the boards in the conference or region to send a letter and maybe that carries more weight.

A. Perhaps the CC district would like to fund the lawsuit that is needed to get the state government to change the law that was passed years ago preventing this from happening. That's right folks, the GOVERNMENT is preventing separation
B. The PIAA has already stated there is nothing they can do short of "A".....

But how much latitude is given under that 'law'. I mean, they're placing private schools based on their enrollment, so segregating them around hasn't been an issue. They're not mandating that Guilfoyle play for the 'top level' state championship any more than they are saying that PIAA just needs to include them.
Go the LHSAA route: select and non-select. If you are a public with set boundaries where you can draw students, you're non-select. Have any leeway in who you must or must not take, you're select. Louisiana wanted the state to get involved in their issue, and the state basically shrugged their shoulders that they can divvy up their teams into their championships how they want.
And almost 5 years later, we're still not seeing a recombination of their championships because both sides have generally liked the outcome.

1. If anyone thinks turning things over to law makers is going to fix the problem you're out of your mind. Keep things in perspective, this is high school sports. We can't balance a budget, not sure I want them taking time to discuss sports. 2. We have elected a conservative congress where most of our congressman support school choice initiatives. If it weren't for a strong teacher union presence and PA don't think for a minute we wouldn't have a voucher system here in PA like some other conservative led states have gone to. If you think these people are going to restructure things your crazy.

You guys don't seem to get it. years ago the PA state legislature passed a law that PREVENTS the PIAA from separating the schools. they can't do ANYTHING the seems like that is the goal, this is why they're looking into the many other areas we've discussed like percentages, success factor and such. Back in 1972 the state passed a law REQUIRING the piaa allow catholic schools to participate in it's sports. Unless that law gets repealed, amended or abolished, we have what we have.

billmurray, exactly my point.  Even if we were able to get them to consider it, it's not going to happen.  I honestly see school choice being the direction we end up going in the very near future.  DeVos, Trumps pick for secretary of education is a champion of private schools and school choice, Trump supports the idea, our Republican led state and federal congress supports it, and when we elect a Republican governor next election I think that will spark the end of union led dominance and we'll see some of these changes being made.  There is no chance of splitting public and private.

There's always a chance that they could get it right and split the them. Anything can happen.

Bill do you know what statute the law is I have looked at the PA statutes and the only thing I can find is that the PIAA has to accept private schools as members. I can't find anything that states they have to be in the same playoffs. Wondering if you might know.

In the 70s this debate raged on. The PIAA was moving toward separating them, defining schools as boundary and non boundary schools. They were close to adopting those parameters but In 1974 the General Assembly introduced an amendment stating the PIAA would be required not to discriminate against any student enrolled at a private school. The amendment was made to prevent the PIAA from separating public and private schools, which had been the case from 1943 until 1974 with the existence of the Pennsylvania Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association (PCIAA).
