Shazier injury

Finally just saw an update on Ryan Shazier.  Apparently he had spinal stabilization surgery last night in Pittsburgh.  Obviously this is a LOT more serious than initial reports.  From what I have read, it looks like his career may be over.  Hopefully he can regain full mobility, which is MUCH more important than football.  Many prayers to the Shazier family.

That's crazy. Prayers to that guy.

Let this be a lesson. Tackle with your head up.

Get rid of helmets & pads, and they'll hopefully learn to avoid injuries like that.   You don't hear of injuries like that in soccer or rugby.   -MY- 2 c.

If you get rid of pads and helmets, you've eliminated the game.

I've said to those around me that I don't think football survives at the high school level in ten years.  That was about two years ago, when I said that.  Time will tell.

Football isn't going anywhere. Not in 8 years, not in 10 years, not in 50 years. It's driven by money. There will always be parents out there trying to get their kids a scholarship. There will always be colleges making money off their football team. And the NFL will always take revenue from sponsors. You think a school like PSU will drop a program that funds EVERY other sport they have? No way. Just because numbers are down locally doesn't mean anything other than their are more options for kids all year. Even when rosters had 60 kids, I'd be willing to bet that 5 players or so were still the same ones in the spotlight. Now the 20 kids that didn't ever touch the field just do something else. As for injuries, the game is safer now than what it ever has been. Concussions and spinal injuries are just more recognized and more often diagnosed.

Don't kid your self about concussions, one player in two years has missed a game in the LHAC due to concussion.

Back in the day the concussion protocol was "get a drink and buckle your chin strap you're going back in 3 plays". Now kids sit out at least a week and any symptom is labeled a concussion. It's safer.

Keep the pads, eject/suspend players who lead with the head. People will bellyache at first because of the suspensions, but if everyone sticks to their guns and upholds the suspensions from HS right on up to the NFL, how players play the game will adjust. This isn't 1980, people will still watch the game WITHOUT the big hit.
