i was at Part 1 of the Shade-CV Game Friday and was shocked that both teams had their quarterbacks deep to return kickoffs.  Why do these teams, both of whom have the kids’ dads on the sidelines, do that?

This Is quite commonplace in the Westpac for awhile now. Small schools who's best athlete USUALLY plays the quarterback position, you want them to touch the ball as many times as possible so they're back there returning kicks and punts as well. Do I personally like the decision.....absolutely not. Too much risk and not enough frequency of a reward to have them back there every kick.

If you only have 23 players sometimes there's not much you can do. And it gives your best player the ball in space. Is what it is for Class A football.

Sometimes the QB is just that good at it that you can't afford to not have them to do it. My teammate in HS was our QB (3 year starter), returned punts and KO's all three years. Had over a dozen (don't remember the exact number) returns for TD's in his three years. He was just that good. Looking back on it, he would have made a better RB than QB, but that's a whole different discussion.....

I played QB and the D-Line (DE) so pick your poison. Hardly any small school QB's have a break at all.

Players can get hurt doing anything. A Quad-A qb injured himself on a QB sneak that he broke for a long run. I too used to feel it was crazy to have QBs returning kicks/punts, but I don't know, through the years is there really that much more of a chance a skill player hurts themselves on a return than on a regular offensive play?

Is the problem QB's returning kicks, or parents on the coaching staff? Why do schools think its a good idea to add parents to the coaching staff? Are they that desperate for coaches? Of course I'm not talking about guys like Fyfe who happen to have a kid come through the system, but the patents who 'coach' only when their kid is on the team.

I don't know why a coach would let his QB return kicks. When I see the coach's kid doing it I have to wonder if it's not being done to increase marketability at the next level and to pad stats.

Maybe they are just trying to put the best 11 on the field at all times.

I think one of the parts of this that people are missing is this is one of the few opportunities for the quarterback to discuss what is going on on the field with the offense of coordinator, as most quarterbacks are playing defense and usually the holder on the extra-point try, kickoff and kick return or one of the few times they get off of the field.
I agree with the comments about fathers on the sidelines interesting how they become a knowledgeable coach whenever their son is playing quarterback
