Mountain League - Week 3

Last Week 2-2 (10-2 overall)

Susquehanna Township (0-2) @ Huntingdon (1-1)...Figured the Huntindgon/Bellefonte match-up last week would be a defensive battle but didn't expect the Bearcats and experienced QB Andrew Hudy to get shutout. Don't know much about ST other than the fact they are 0-2 and play in the Mid-Penn. I'll take the Bearcats to right the ship this week at home. Huntingdon 28 Susquehanna Township 13

Philipsburg-Osceola (0-2) vs Bellefonte (2-0) @ Lock Haven University...With the Red Raiders field under renovation they will begin their home slate at LHU this week.Bellefonte may have the best defense in the league this year and avenged their lone conference loss last from last year to Huntingdon by shutting them out 10-0 last week. Offensively the Red Raiders have yet to find their niche but they won't need much this week vs the Mounties. Bellefonte 42 Philipsburg-Osceola 0

Bishop Carroll (1-1) @ Tyrone (2-0)...The Golden Eagles flexed their muscles last week and took care of their 2nd rival opponent in as many weeks. The experience upfront and under center will be the difference in many of their match-ups this year. Tailback Zac Albright has been the beneficiary of the holes being opened up front to the tune of 295 yards after 2 weeks of action. The Huskies play their 1st PA opponent and 1st game against their new league foes. I think BC will hang early but look for Tyrone to pull away in the 2nd half. Tyrone 27 Bishop Carroll 13

Central (1-1) @ Clearfield (2-0)...The Bison have been my pick as the favorite in the league since the offseason and while I stand by that pick their defense continues to raise some red flags. They took care of an improved Penns Valley team last week but gave up 35 points in doing so. Meanwhile the Dragons got a wake up call at home with Tyrone coming into Roaring Spring and smacking them in the mouth in route to a 33-13 Central defeat. We will have an idea of what direction the Dragon season may go once we see how they respond this Friday night on the turf in Clearfield. At the same time we will find out if the Bison defense will continue to hold them back this year. I'm giving my Dragons the benefit of the doubt that they will bounce back this week and making them my upset/homer pick of the week. Central 29 Clearfield 28

Game of the Week
Penns Valley (1-1) @ Bald Eagle Area (2-0)...Two teams who have typically been in the bottom portion of the league look to be trending upward. Penns Valley gave Clearfield all they could handle last week and went to the half tied before being overpowered by the best offense in the league. BEA hasn't played the toughest competition thus far but did what good teams do against lesser teams and left with easy wins. While I was surprised with the Rams performance last week I still think BEA is the better team this year. Bald Eagle Area 34 Penns Valley 20

I believe BEA has started 5-0 several times before the collapse to 5-5. They say this year is different we shall see. Its been since the days of the Big 8 since a title landed in Wingate

Yeah I’m by no means calling for title talks in BEA. They still need to show they can beat the yearly contenders.

With BEA it seems once they get that 1st lost it starts piling up on them. They let the ghosts of years past in their heads.

Or maybe the tough part of the schedule is the 2nd half

Central has some nice classes at all 3 JH grade levels in both football and baseball. 9th grade game was 32-0 at half and don’t think we attempted a pass after the 2nd quarter. Tyrone JH baseball is really good but didn’t see many of those same kids on the football field.
