We have discussed the running up the score subject, ad naseum. I, on occasion have tried to defend Roger. However, it came to my attention that not every LV player got to play Friday night in the Rams rout of Marion Center. LV led by 49 - 6 at halftime. The fact that EVERY player did not see playing time is unconscionable! It’s high school football for jiminy sakes! The vast majority aren’t these guys will never see a college field unless it is from the bleachers. All of those kids practice every day. With the insurmountable leads that LV achieves every game, this practice is unacceptable. A win is a win, whether you achieve the victory by one or by forty, unless you feel the need to be the big guy on campus! Coach Foust, I have the upmost respect for you. You were taught the right way. Could you please enlighten me as why this is going on.

It is high school football not AYSO soccer.
Roger has gone out of his way lining up JV games so everyone gets meaningful playing opportunities. 

Tubmill, I was not there Friday because I am out if town for a week or so.  But I can tell you that we typically try to play everyone if we see it fit.  We also play more JV games than anyone in our conference.  We play teams like Berlin, Hollidaysburg and Burrell.  So our young guys are definitely getting playing time of some sort.  Last I will say this, it was 49-6 at the half and everyone expects LV to play their subs and we did.  Why doesn't everyone expect MC to play their subs as well?  They played their starters the entire game and I know this because I've watched the film multiple times.  Why did they do this?  To pad their stats against our 2nd and 3rd string players? #33 for them had 13 yards on 8 carries at half time and ended with 126 yards on 13 carries playing against freshman and sophomores.  What did he get from that? My son is currently a freshman on our team and he didn't play one snap Friday night.  I am glad he didn't.  Why send him out against MC starters and let him get destroyed by a 235 pound senior late in the game?  That doesn't help him.  But guess what, he then played over half the JV game yesterday.  Make no mistake about it, our players play football and aren't just tackling dummies.  But at the same time, we're not going to put our young guys in a safety situation.

Yes I’m sure there are kids that don’t see time on Friday nights. I’m willing to bet those same kids see their time on Mondays. Their time will come.

Also, we knew that our JV game was cancelled last week against Mo Valley so when we had the opportunity against Purchase Line to play everyone and we did.  Every kid that was eligible to play that night, played.  There are many different circumstances and variables that grant playing time.

This cracks me up. I used to be a part of a successful team and found with us that the guys who usually got screwed were the 2nd team. You let your first team play until the score is 35-0 and sometimes that is 1st quarter. Than parents are yelling to put in kids who put in no work. Most of the time your 2nd string is also too good to leave in there long because than its 49-0. We had guys who had no business playing in the varsity game 2nd in most statistical categories because of this. I agree with foust, jv games are for that. Football should help these boys prepare for life in that you aren't entitled to things you don't earn, whether that is becauae of talent, work ethic, attitudw, or behavior. I'm sure every boy that deserved a minute got one and the boys who didn't can either work harder or quit just like life. Go to AYSO!!!!

Ha ha ha.  Ligonier Valley doesn’t want to put its undersized freshmen into games they’re winning by 50 but get mad when schools with a third of its  enrollment choose to strategically forfeit a game to avoid putting theirs on the field from the get go against them.

And Jimmy John Joe Bob, your post takes the cake.  

I'm not defending LV, I wasn't at any of their games. But to say that every kid should play in every one of their blow outs is as ridiculous to me as is running up score. What don't you like about my post?

As a relatively new bleacher coach, my feelings are hurt. Even if its not a good point or you disagree you have to give me a like or a thumbs up.

Jimjohn, you have no idea about this particular situation. Furthermore, I have defended Roger Beitel from attacks made on the “running up the score” subject. I have done this even though, I have first hand knowledge of the demeaner that he has displayed in the past. Ligonier hadn’t defeated Laurel Valley in many years. Finally, they had a breakout year, when they defeated the Rams 14 - 7. In that game, I found unsportsmanlike behavior displayed, not from the Ligonier coaches, but from Ligonier adults. As the the LV team kneeled around Coach Page, grown adults went out on the Laurel Valley field, next to where the Rams were huddled. They actually were taunting high school kids. The following year, Ligonier was loaded and achieved a big lead by the half. My son was in his second year as starter for the Rams that year. When the teams took the field, to begin the second half, My son overheard Roger telling his players “let’s lay fifty-five on these guys”. I will continue to be hopeful that Coach Beitel does right by all of his players and I try to defend his actions.However, I will always remember, what Roger said that night and wonder about his intentions. I can agree with you about football preparing young people for life. People forget that athletics should be an integral part of or high school education. I can agree with your criteria for a player getting into a game. However, I would argue that all four categories don’t come into play. I have frequently seen coaches play talented players that lack work ethic, a good attitude or good behavior. Coaches in all sports, who exhibit this behavior could care less about teaching kids about life. Quite often, some of these very athletes are the very ones that fail in life. Many get in trouble with the law, do just enough to get by in school and end up with dead end job. The young person, whom of I am speaking, exhibits high character. He is a high honor roll student. He is a big strapping fellow.His Dad was a four year starter for Laurel Valley and coached at the high school level. I would also like to point another criteria for playing time, size. Sometimes this criteria can be overcome by some. My own brother was a 126 lb offensive lineman at Laurel Valley for his senior season. That entire team was undersized, yet they finished 6 - 3 against much larger schools. To this very day, Coach Page will tell you that this was his very favorite team. Now, these guys learned a lot about life from there experience! Quite often in small school football, lineman, who are obese, become starters, just because they can plug a hole. What do these young people learn about life? Is it I can lack discipline in my eating habits and I’ll still be entitled? Eventually, these very individuals cost others money, because of healthcare costs due to their high risk factor. Sir, you can’t be sure about anything. You don’t have any idea what transpired on Friday night! By the way, I love high school football and have no interest in any kind of soccer. I find it sacrilegious to see soccer nets on a real football field. Finally, I feel blessed that my sons were able to play for Coach Jerry Page. My youngest, recently wrote Coach Page a letter, thanking him for what he had learned about life from him and the great game of football. Coach Gerald Page will go down as one of the best area coaches of my lifetime. His teams not only won, but they did so with dignity.
