Coach Loya was awarded Somerset County coach of the year honors by his coaching peers the other night at the all county banquet. Considering he has now won a couple of these awards and multiple WestPac and district championships it would be hard for NS to justify a change at the moment.

If windber can get a coach that can earn the players and parents respect, i think they can be a good basketball program again

I have a hard time accepting that quote from you, Windber4L1f3...I know that is your opinion, so good for you.

Whatever happened to a kid respecting their coach right from the start? A coach is hired based on their credentials, previous experience, knowledge of the game, etc. A player has no right to demand anything from a coach. The coach will put forth their best effort, countless hours in the gym, breaking down film, all for the benefit of the team and players. Coaches should not have to cater to a player, or worse yet, their parents.

No player should have the right to say to a grown man, you have to earn my respect. It's ridiculous, and probably what is wrong with some programs nowadays. Players need to keep their mouths shut, play the game, work to be a better teammate, and strive to be successful, and most importantly, do what they are told. If a kid needs his butt kissed in order for him to play hard, then the parents did something wrong.

Just my thoughts. :)

if a kid does not respect his coach, why would he listen to him? then the kid complains to the parents that he doesnt like the coach and now the parents don't like him. that is what happened at windber.

I'm an old school type of guy, but I realize this it's not the 50's 60's or 70's anymore. The players, culture, and times have changed. The days of the Bobby Knight style coaches are over.

You need a unique blend of demanding respect without suffocating the players. I think the coaches nowadays have to sell the program and themselves right off the bat. Do I think its right for kids to sit out because they don't like a coach, NO. But this is America, if students don't want to play a sport they don't have too.

Now that’s were a coach has to come in and sell what he is doing. The time has changed you either keep up with it or get left in the dust......

Jake, you got it right. The reason there has been a shift from respecting coaches to coaches having to kiss kids a$$es to come out is because of the deterioration of numbers in our local schools. Now most would be classified as "piss ant" schools. Many have less than 250 in 4 grades. With such low numbers and the explosion of trash parents who do not know about the concepts of accountability and responsibility, let alone teach them to their kids, now a coach not only has to know how to coach, but must also be a life lesson teacher, guidance counselor, psychologist, pseudo parent, taxi driver (to pick up kids for practice), and song and dance man to "attract" kids to "please play for him"... "please oh please come out for the team". It's become a joke anymore. And Joe Flori is rolling over---- Windber mothers who abuse your coach.

This area has devolved into a bunch of uncompetitive, jealous, little piss ant high schools -- each of which hate all others and seek to drag others down to their pitiful level. It is so sad to see what has happened around the area, especially having the memory of what it was like in the 50's 60's and 70's when most schools were competitive. But then the same thing is happening all over this backward state that is caught in a time warp of 600 school districts with a aging, declining population. Where is the $$ going to come from to support these 600 school districts??

Consolidate into a county wide school district with 3-4 high schools, unified purchasing power, a single overseeing school board, one superintendant, combined services -- AND SOME FREAKING COMPETITION IN ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS for the first time since the 70's. This is the only answer and the longer you wait, the more our kids get hurt.
