Berlin vs Shanksville - Round 4 - PIAA State West Semi-Finals

Berlin Brothersvalley Lady Mountaineers 23-5
vs
Shanksville Stonycreek Lady Vikings 24-4

UPJ – 7 PM Tuesday 3/19

Previous meetings
Shanksville 45-38
Shanksville 62-51
Berlin 51-37 (D5 Championship)

ROUND 4 PREVIEW
This will arguably be the biggest game in D5 Girls history. I would hold it higher than North Star making the finals because two D5 teams are playing to decide who goes to the chocolate city. The best of the West is on the line. Finding a seat at UPJ Tuesday night will be a challenge. Most of the fans have friends on either side of route 31. They’ve sat intermingled the last 3 games not must sit apart. Both have watched and cheered for the other to beat each of the three teams. Shanksville/Berlin has been a huge rivalry with this season being no exception. They wanted to keep winning to get this match up, even loaning out some shoes to make it happen.

Both teams have caught absolute fire in the state playoffs, Shankville crushed Coudersport (9-3) 52-28 and Rochester (7-1) 66-50, and won a hard fought game against Vincentian (7-4) 42-36. Berlin dismantled Avella (7-5) 79-30, Kennedy Catholic (10-1) 54-43, and Sewickley Academy (7-6) 61-23. Their lineups are very similar with Berlin having a few more girls off the bench.

Shanksville’s led by senior,1000 point scorer Sidney Stutzman, Kara Platt, Lexi Wilt, junior Hannah Platt, and the freshman duo cousins of Josie and Rylee Snyder. Rylee Snyder has been the Lady Vikings big go to under the rim. She’s had a pile of post season points and is not playing at all like a freshman. The other five all have the ability to bring the ball down the court and shoot from beyond the arc. When they start hitting from three, they can run away with a game. Josie Snyder and Hannah Platt also offer Rylee solid help underneath with Wilt off the bench as a solid shooter. Stutzman suffered a dislocated shoulder against Vincentian, however returned to finish. She does the majority of the ball handling, but we may see duties more spread out with her shoulder recovering. Kara Platt is the harrasser, she can run with almost anyone and is quick to poke her hand at the ball. This is a veteran squad that’s all had significant playing time since their freshman years. Keys to win: Limit Berlin’s rebounding and control the ball.. Berlin can run points up in a hurry, so they’ll need to dictate the tempo.

Berlin’s led by senior, Zoe Harding, 1000 point scorer Zoie Smith, Maria Engleka, and Mckena Foor, junior 1000 point scorer Kiera Booth and Lexi Yanosky with younger help off the bench. These girls made it to the volleyball final this year, that has helped them. The lady Mountaineers hav been hurting teams the most in transition. They’re able to pass the ball effectively to get quick layups. Booth has been a force underneath scoring a majority of the points. Harding, Smith, and Yanosky all offer points from three or just inside while Engleka and Foor have done well underneath along with Booth rebounding putbacks. Harding has been a rock on this team through the playoffs dribbling out of trouble to finish off games. She’s very good at breaking the press. Another veteran squad with a balanced attack. Keys to win: Control the boards and cause turnovers. Limit Shanksville’s shooters from setting to shoot from the arc.

This is one you won’t want to miss. I’m predicting………..D5 well represented at Hershey.
