Gazette coverage of Youth Leagues
Gazette coverage of Youth Leagues
I'd just like to first point out that I have been one of the Gazette's biggest critics on this site. I also said at the time that when they do a good job, I'd point that out as well.
Their coverage of the Youth Leagues has been great. Sam Shuss took the time to attend league meetings and explain what they would need to make this a success. I appreciated that, because everyone then knew what was needed and expected. That was one of my criticism's in the past and I know Sam was aware of that. Great job Sam.
I'd also like to point out to the parents to please remember that the home team is the one responsible for sending in the box scores. From what I've seen, the Gazette is printing them as they are sent in. So if you notice a discrepancy from what you believe should have been there, please discuss with the score keeper of the home team for that game. In the CRBL, I believe the coaches are doing a good job of getting the results sent in (not sure about the other leagues).
Also for the parents - keep in mind that there will be times when a ball that's hit does not get counted as a hit. If Johnie hits an easy grounder to the 1st baseman and it goes between the legs of the 1st baseman and Johnie gets on first, the scorekeeper may count that as an error, not a hit. Also, if a hit drops into the outfield for a single, but the ball is overthrown to 2nd base with the runner advancing to 2nd, that hit may be counted as a single, not a double. Even if the visiting counts them as a hit, the home team scorekeeper may not and the home team's book is the one that is sent in. Remember, it's a judgement call on a lot of these and I believe in most cases the scorekeepers are giving the benefit of the doubt to the hitter.
Again, thanks Gazette for a job well done. Keep up the good work.
