I don't know that D5's day was that bad.S Cube wrote:D5 getting pounded...
D5's percentages:
Semifinalists: 11/56 = 20%
Consolations: 13/56 = 23%
Schools with wrestling 12/72 = 17%
Bedford: 4 losses on the day, 3 of which were expected. Thomas was expected to win but him losing wasn't really a shocker, Demaske is good and was in the lead when they wrestled in Bedford. Grimes won 2 matches that he wasn't favored to win, and everybody else won the matches that they were expected to.
Berlin: Swank majored a returning state qualifier in a match that I'd call a tossup going in. Miller was stuck facing 2 studs who should medal @ Hershey. The younger Fochtman wrestled well, an OT loss and a win in 2 matches that I'd call tossups. The older Fochtman was upset in the 1/4s, then lost a match that I had as a tossup. Walker kept 1st round match close, won a match that he was favored in then finally knocked of Winegardner.
Chestnut Ridge: Burket & Dunlop performed as I expected. Claar lost 2 tossups. Crouse lost a tossup round 1, but his round 2 loss was a surprise, as Ging didn't even place at the Thomas tournament. Bollman's 2nd loss was surprising, though his shoulder situation made him a big question mark. Dibert and Buttry performed as expected, and Albright won a questionable match.
Conemaugh Township: Cahills took care of business.
Hyndman: I had Bennett favored over Maines, particularly due to his injury. So an upset loss there. Emerick wrestling well.
Meyersdale: Day with an upset win (in my mind) over Vahaly. Deist had another of Zalar. Dunbar lost a tossup to Pecora. Berkeley did as expected.
North Star: Fritch lost 2 as expected.
Northern Bedford: D5's biggest disappointment with a 2 point, no top 8 finisher performance. Childers hurt early, ending his season. Then the senior big 3 all lost a tossup and a match that they were favored in, though sometimes not in that order. I think that Garland's round 1 3-2 win over Stay was the school's only victory, this after Gartland majored and won by fall/DQ over Stay in their previous 2 meetings.
Somerset: Lohr with an upset win to get to the semis. Nickolson lost to Croyle wasn't a surprise, as Croyle has won that matchup when Nickolson was healthy.
Tussey: Hall won a tossup match (in my mind) over Beistel, looked good doing it.
Everett & perhaps Shade better luck next year.

Re: SW Regionals
I'm guessing he meant that it was toss-up going in.

Re: SW Regionals
I agree with odoyle though. As a whole D-5 is holding their own. Some sure surprises in NBC and CR performance so far, but overall as a district doing Ok.
D-5 is never going to go and send 20 some kids to states. I would guess we typically get between 7-14. 14 being a VERY good year.
Chris Miller had a brutal draw.
Focthman, Gartland were two I thought would go to states feel bad for them.
Bedford has to be very happy 7 of 7 still alive is impressive in our region.
D-7 kids whip out the finger wave constantly when in trouble. Happened to Gabriel and Lohr. Lohr had his kid stuck at the time Pencil should have slapped the mat instead of granting the injury time. Gabriel was probably looking at OT at worst if Griffths doesn't ask for his timeout to get a restart.

Re: SW Regionals
Albright I should have used "tossup" instead of "questionable." It was a nice win for him. Another tossup match today vs. Croyle imo.
imo if a wrestler asks for injury time, especially during live action, then his opponent should get a choice of starting position for the next restart. Which I think is how the NCAA handles things.

Re: SW Regionals
If D5 wasn't having a bad tournament after last night, it got a lot worse after the semifinals. Having only 2 kids making the finals (Easter, Cahill) won't help the cause.
