Changes to PJW States
Changes to PJW States
I was just reading about the changes that will be coming in 2014 for the PJW States. They are removing the 13-14 age division and adding a true Jr High State championship tournament. They will hold the Jr High states as soon as the Jr high season is over and keep the youth tournament at the same time of year. I think this will be a great change. My one question is, will a 9th grader that wrestled varsity be able to enter the Jr. High tournament? Also, I hope they never add a 6 and under division.

Re: Changes to PJW States
I agree with the 6 and u view. I thought a 9th grader with varsity experience couldn't participate starting this year. If not, I wouldn't let my kid walk out against Jordan Wood, the kid , age wise is JO elligible and as PIAA AAA runnerup gave PSU recruit Haines all he could handle. You want your 13 year old latching on to that?

First, Eaglesfan, you gotta find a new name. Every post you have I think is from Eaglealum. At first I'm like "why is eaglealum responding to himself, oh, wait..."
Second, freshman could still wrestle this year. Dunlap from Ridge and Kolinchak from NB are two quick examples.

Re: Changes to PJW States
next year no varsity wrestlers will be PJW bound....
strictly a junior high tournament..
a 12 year junior high wrestler next year could choose between the two separate tourneys but not both....
At least that's is what is being said as of now.

Re: Changes to PJW States
I posted my original reply on the wrong thread.....9th grade wrestlers with varsity experience will NOT be eligible for Jr High states. The problem is the ever-increasing 8th grade hold-backs and how to handle that. There will be a double-8th grader next year that will be 16 by the time of Jr High states (not this area).
They should have a cap on the age if you redo 8th grade.

Also I hope it stays a true state championship with no AA or AAA classes.

Re: Changes to PJW States
I believe this 'jr high states' will be held the same weekend as the SW regional tourney.
Re: Changes to PJW States
Boxer if im following you correctly you are saying a kid is repeating 8thgrade he will be ineligable his senior year. Athletes only have 6 years of elligabilty from grades 7 through 12.

nitlions-
That is exactly what I'm saying--this is a growing trend for 8th graders to be held back. Most are sitting out that year and calling it 'home school', and others are going to a private/catholic school. My understanding of the rule is the eligibility clock does not start until 9th grade, and Jr High is not included. This must be the case, because there are several 'hold backs' that competed at PJW this season, and will be moving onto 9th grade next year at 16yrs old (and did not get questioned on eligibility). There is one in particular that cut down to 82lbs in 8th grade (from 90+lbs), and will re-do his 8th grade year because his dad said he is 'too small'. This kid has a summer birthday, so he will have a Learners Permit for PJW states next year, LOL.

Period of Time After Eighth Grade, Participation, and Grade Repetition
Your athletic eligibility extends only until you have reached the end of your fourth consecutive year (8th consecutive semester or the equivalent) beyond the eighth grade. Therefore, if you repeat a grade after eighth, you will be ineligible as a senior.
