NCAA Brackets

Post by Stonycreek »

Being fairly new to this forum, I was wondering if anyone is up for some discussion on college wrestling. Most of the HS wrestling is over for the year so I thought I would give it a shot. Here are the brackets for this years tournament.

Even if its talk about local wrestlers I will do my best to answer any questions that anyone has. I'm not looking forward to the off-season.

125 - #2 Nahshon Garrett (Cornell) Dec. #1 Alan Waters (Missouri)
133 - #1 Christopher Dardanes (Minnesota) Maj Dec. #7 James Gulibon (Penn State)
141 - #1 Logan Stieber (Ohio State) Dec. #2 Mitchell Port (Edinboro)
149 - #2 Jason Tsirtsis (Northwestern) Dec. #1 Drake Houdashelt (Missouri)
157 - #4 James Green (Nebraska) Dec. #2 Brian Realbuto (Cornell)
165 - #1 Alex Dieringer (Oklahoma St.) Dec. #2 Michael Moreno (Iowa St.)
174 - #1 Robert Kokesh (Nebraska) Dec. #2 Matt Brown (Penn State)
184 - #2 Max Thomusseit (Pittsburgh) Dec. #1 Gabe Dean (Cornell)
197 - #1 J'Den Cox (Missouri) Dec. #2 Morgan McIntosh (Penn State)
HWT -#2 Mike McMullan (Northwestern) Dec. #5 Connor Medbery (Wisconsin)

Team Champions- Missouri

Notes:
133- I think if Jimmy can get by Mason in the 2nd round he'll have the confidence he needs to go deep, unfortunately for him that's going to be his biggest battle. He was absolutely shredding guys earlier in the year.

157- James Green is one of my favorite wrestlers and is the only guy to give Martinez a match all year, I like him upsetting the Freshman on the big stage and then taking the title

165- I think the top half of this bracket is loaded...in my opinion Bo Jordan and Nick Sulzer are both better than Moreno. I wouldn't be surprised if Jordan/Sulzer were able to upset Dieringer and win a title.

174- Brown/Evans in the Semifinals, obviously either one of these guys can beat the other but I gave the edge to Brown because he beat him in Big10s and he's from Penn State, either way I don't think either of them beat Kokesh. Oddly enough I think Evans matches up better with Kokesh than Brown.

184 - Mad Max is winning a title at 184. I'm sure he hasn't forgot about his only loss this year...to Mr Dean. A late 2nd round pin when he got caught.

197 - It's going to be Gadson or McIntosh in the finals vs. Cox, match could go either way but I gave the nod to McIntosh because he's been wrestling well lately and wrestled better competition all year

HWT - I don't know, this weight class is funky. I really could see 4-5 different guys being able to win...

Yeah this is one of my highlighted second round matches and if Geoff Alexander can pull off an upset in the top half of the bracket, chances are the loser of Gulibon-Beckman could face the 8th seed Kevin Devoy. That is of course and "if" situation. Beckman split with devoy and Jimmy beat him 7-2. Going 1-2 isn't something either of these guys wants to do but anyone can tell you that there are no easy matches at the NCAA's.

Last years champs by seed: 1,3,2,5,3,1,1,2,2,2. I think the majority of number 1 seeds will win it this year.
Here are my (AA) All American picks for this year.
125
1. Alan Waters
2. Joey Dance
3. Nashon Garrett
4. Thomas Gilman
5. Nathan Tomasello
6. Dylan Peters
7. Tyler Cox
8. Eddie Klimara
No I don’t have Delgado in here and he could very well win the whole thing but I chose to leave him out. The top 5 seem to be pretty even and all have a chance to win it.
133
1. Chris Dardanes
2. Ryan Taylor
3. Earl Hall
4. Cody Brewer
5. Cory Clark
6. Zane Richards
7. A.J. Schopp
8. Jimmy Gulibon
Injuries are a big factor this year (like most others) but I think more high caliber wrestlers are question marks coming in, Schopp being the one here.
141
1. Logan Stieber
2. Mitchell Port
3. Nick Dardanes
4. Devin Carter
5. Lavion Mayes
6. Josh Dziewa
7. Anthony Abidin
8. Anthony Ashnault
I’d love to see Port make it close or whoever gets to the finals but Stieber is hard to beat.
149
1. Jason Tsirtsis
2. Branden Sorenson
3. Drake Houdashelt
4. Josh Kindig
5. Hunter Stieber
6. Dave Habat
7. Chris Villalonga
8. Alec Panteleo
Again, Stieber is a question mark. This will probably be a 2-1 dec (in OT).
157
1. Isaiah Martinez
2. Dylan Ness
3. James Green
4. Cody Pack
5. Brian Realbuto
6. Ian Miller
7. Nick Brascetta
8. John Boyle
I’m going with the Freshman here, no reason not to. He goes for points and gets them.
165
1. Alex Dieringer
2. Issac Jordan
3. Nick Sulzer
4. Michael Moreno
5. Bo Jordan
6. Taylor Walsh
7. Dylan Palacio
8. Tristan Warner
Dieringer seems to be a little ahead of the rest of the group.
174
1. Robert Kokesh
2. Loagan Storley
3. Matt Brown
4. Mike Evans
5. John Eblen
6. Blaise Butler
7. Zach Epperly
8. Tyler Wilps
This could be any of the top four even though Kokesh has proven his #1 seed.
184
1. Gabriel Dean
2. Max Thomusseit
3. Jack Dechow
4. Taylor Meeks
5. Nathaniel Brown
6. Blake Stauffer
7. Domenic Abounader
8. Lorenzo Thomas
I look for this to be a good match, Dean will have confidence and Thomusseit will want revenge.
197
1. J’Den Cox
2. Morgan McIntosh
3. Kyven Gadson
4. Kyle Snyder
5. Scott Schiller
6. Nathan Burak
7. Conner Hartmann
8. Tim McCall
J’Den has looked tough. If MM makes it to the finals I look for him to put up a good fight.
285
1. Michael McMullan
2. Nick Gwiazdowski
3. Bobby Telford
4. Austin Marsden
5. Adam Coon
6. Connor Medbery
7. Ty Walz
8. Jimmy Lawson
3-2 McMullen

If you have the time Thursday - Saturday, I encourage you to watch the championships. With all rounds being covered it would be great for the sport if they viewing numbers increased this year.

I'll definitely be watching as much as I can. Unfortunately I'll be out of town this weekend so semifinals and finals are going to be tough for me to catch. DAMNIT
