Scouts honor?

Austin Urban is a good pitcher and Mike Mastovich is a good sports writer, but 17 scouts? I don't think there are 17 Major League scouts in all of Pennsylvania anymore.

Scout is sometimes a term that is used loosely. I would like to see the boy throw. If he threw 40 pitches 90+ then that makes me believe he pitches at 90 not just tops out at 90. I hope he gets a shot.

Scout....Well Larry McCabe is considered a scout, I think for the Braves. John DeFazio used to be a scout. I mean they aren't necessarily like top scouts, just guys who loosely are associated with higher scouts.

I think "Bird Dog" is the term for an unpaid underling who just is a "pair of eyes" for a paid scout. "Bird dogs" just check players out and stay in touch with the MLB scout with who they work.

If the Urban can pitch in the 90's then he will get a good look. I hear he is going to Penn State, was there interest from any baseball schools?

Talked with Rick Roberts and Mike Holtz. They were both at the game. There were 18 legit scouts from all across the country. A couple cross-checkers, and some front office brass. No local bird dog types, unless you count Mike and Rick in that group.

i agree that urban is a solid player, but i wldnt put him much over Josh Bracken. he plays shortstop and pitches just like urban and hes only a sophmore. rite now he has a 589 batting average and a 1.86 after pitching 24 innings. he is a freak on the diamond with 18 stolen bases. but lets talk about his hitting and pitching, shall we? he bats switch and pitches ampidextrous! the kids sick 2 watch, he doesnt throw quite as hard as urban but hes also 2 yrs youger. he averages at 88 rite now and has topped out at 91 a few times. the kid is an absolute phenom!
