The Somerset Area Soccer Boosters held their 3rd Annual boys’ varsity undergraduate indoor soccer tournament in the Somerset Area Junior High School gymnasium this past weekend. The tournament featured 16 teams. The high schools represented included Deer Lakes, Conemaugh Twp., North Star, Southmoreland, Windber, Bishop McCort, Johnstown Christian, Yough, Laurel Highlands, Hempfield, Geibel Catholic, Belle Vernon, and Somerset.
A great deal of talent and sportsmanship was on display as the teams battled through bracket play.

Eight teams advanced from the brackets to a single elimination playoff format. In the first of four quarterfinal games, in a battle of Somerset County teams, North Star took the bragging rights by defeating Somerset (Orange) by a score of 2-1. Southmoreland followed by eliminating Deer Lakes (White) 2 goals to 0. Deer Lakes (Green) advanced by edging Conemaugh Twp. 3-2 in OT. Belle Vernon completed the quarterfinal round by shutting out Windber 6-0.

In the first semi-final, North Star defeated Southmoreland 2-0. In the second semi-final match, Belle Vernon edged Deer Lakes (Green) 1-0.
In the Championship match, North Star and Belle Vernon provided an exciting end to the day. North Star scored first forcing Belle Vernon to play from behind for the first time all day. Belle Vernon battled back and tied the score at one late in regulation. Both teams exchanged quality opportunities, but were unable to take the lead. The tight and cleanly played game went into overtime and Belle Vernon was able to take advantage of a scramble in front of the North Star goal and tuck the ball into the goal for a 2-1 victory.
