Pitt vs Penn state cfb series ends in 2019

I’ve come to the consensus that the committee will bend the requirements to get the teams they want in anyways.

I’ve always said that the 10 or 15 mega college football powers don’t want the process to change. They want a small tournament that is selected by a committee and without a true criteria to make it. Why? Because the committee will (it has been proven) favor the blueblood program over the better resume. 

Pitt only benefit for playing Penn State is they sell more tickets.

Penn State really doesn’t have a benefit to play Pitt. If anything, they help fund a program that will compete with them for regional recruits.

It’s really a lose, lose.

Penn State’s best crowd in 10 years was Pitt, so coincidentally enough Pitt helped PSU fill their stadium.

107K for Pitt with national TV seems better than 96K for insert MAC school here on the B1G network.

PSU vs AKRON was over 101,000 so pitt doesn’t really help with attendance. There will be over 100,000 people there every game. The only time Heinz is sold out is if PSU, WVU, or ND go

Actually Crimson, Penn State's best crowd EVER was last year against Michigan - 110,823. Just sayin'

Again, it was Penn State's best attended game in 8-9 years and highest priced single-game ticket from last season.  It was kind of a big deal.

So in a five year stretch, the only 2 games that drew over the 107,000 capacity was Pitt and Michigan of this year.  The only times Penn State gets to capacity are generally Ohio State and Michigan.   So typically for PSU to have a full sellout, they need Ohio State, Michigan, or Pitt to make it happen.

101 for Akron is obviously good, but I'm sure business owners in State College appreciate when there's an extra 8,000 fans in town when Pitt is there.  Penn State claims they have to run the entire athletic budget off of Penn State football home games, so I guess every dollar matters. Might as well play Pitt.

Like I said, it doesn't need to be an annual thing. But as long as both schools keep each other in the rotation, I'll be happy.

Don’t kind yourself, if Penn State is good they are to their 106,000 every game. Last year they only missed it by a few thousand for Akron or Georgia State. 

I can guarantee if PSU is still a 9+ win program, VT, Auburn, and WVU will be around the 110,000 number. 

Pitt was the 1st non-conference game in about 15 years where PSU was a top 10 team going into the game. 

Pitt may move Penn State’s needle. But it’s just a few hundred tickets. So it’s really a nothing burger.

Two ways to interpret the same thing I guess, it was pretty obvious the Pitt game was a big deal in State College last year, many PSU fans acknowledge it. The only ones that don’t acknowledge it are the ones that like to talk down on Pitt.  Would have been the same crowd there if PSU was unranked.  


Most of the websites that announced PSU’s non-conference schedule in future seasons mentioned not playing Pitt more so than the teams they are going to play.   They know their readership cares about the game.

The petty pissing match created by any talk of Pitt-Penn State is proof that the game should be played on an annual basis.  The truth is neither side needs it but more importantly neither side wants to lose to the other and the alternative excuses given for not continuing it are certainly amusing.
