District Six Boys Basketball Power Rankings 1/29/2017

1. State College 13-3
The Little Lions just keep on winning. They have won six in a row, and went 2-0 last week with wins over Chambersburg and Cumberland Valley.  They play host to three teams this week: Carlisle, Altoona, and Central Dauphin.  Carlisle should be a tough one, State College won the first meeting 77-70.

2. Altoona 8-7
Tough week upcoming for Doug West's squad.  They have to play the best 6A, 5A, and 2A teams in District Six.  The week starts with a trip to Bishop McCort, then a trip to State College before a home game against neighboring Hollidaysburg.  We'll see what Altoona is made of this week.

3. Mifflin County 2-15
Tough season for Mifflin County, they just haven't seemed to get their footing all year. They lost both games last week by wide margins. They host Central Dauphin East on Friday.

1. Hollidaysburg 10-6
Hollidaysburg moves into the top spot with a head to head win over Central Mountain. The Golden Tigers have two tough games this week with trips to Altoona and Central.  Should be some good playoff prep for Hollidaysburg.

2. Central Mountain 12-4
Central Mountain had another good week, as they went 2-1 to improve to 12-4 on the year. They still hold the top spot in the playoff seeding for now.  They did lose to Hollidaysburg at home this week, but the two teams will be meeting again very soon in the postseason.

3. Bellefonte 8-9
The Red Raiders picked up a pair of wins last week to inch closer to .500.  They beat Philipsburg-Osceola at home and beat Mifflinburg on the road.  It wasn't all good however, they did start the week with a loss to a very good Clearfield team.  This week has three games on the schedule highlighted by a road trip to Tyrone on Tuesday night.

1. Central 11-3
In a bit of a stunner, Central's winning streak came to a halt with a loss to Penns Valley. Even so, it's been a good run for the Dragons and they have a chance to get back on track this week with a trio of home games.  The game with Hollidaysburg tomorrow night should be a good one.

2. Johnstown 10-5
The Trojans are on a bit of a roll.  They've won three quality games in a row over Hollidaysburg, Forest Hills, and Central Cambria.  This is a big week in the Johnstown region for basketball, as all four city schools will be meeting up on Wednesday and Friday. Johnstown heads to Westmont and hosts Bishop McCort.

3. Huntingdon 9-7
Huntingdon climbs into the rankings for the first time all year. They dismantled Tyrone 72-47 this week to surge past the struggling Golden Eagles.  They have a home game versus a very dangerous Penns Valley team on Monday, along with games against Mt. Union and Philipsbirg-Osceola on the road.

1. Richland 12-3
Richland posted three blowout wins this week and that vaults them into the top spot.  The road for Greg Burke's squad will be much harder to navigate this week.  All three games will be away from home, starting with a trip to Tyrone on Monday.  They also must travel to Bishop McCort on Wednesday in a pivotal LHAC Section II showdown.

2. Westmont 12-5
Westmont had to work overtime last week.....literally.  The Hilltoppers played in an instant classic at Bishop Guilfoyle, but came up on the wrong end 87-81 in triple overtime.  They also needed an extra frame to beat Bishop Carroll at home.  Westmont has a big game on Wednesday with Johnstown making the short trip.

3. Juniata 16-1
Juniata fell from the ranks of the unbeatens as West Perry knocked off the Indians.  They host Newport this week and go to East Juniata.

4. Ligonier Valley 15-4
Nobody in the area is as hot as Ligonier is of late.  The Rams have been on an absolute roll lately having won 12 straight games. The game everyone wants to see is Friday night as Ligonier heads to Saltsburg. Ligonier has handed Saltsburg their only loss this season. The rematch should feature a packed house.

5. Central Cambria 11-5
The Red Devils lost a pair of close games to two pretty good teams.  Hard to drop them out of the rankings for that.  Evan Bopp and Matt Holsinger have been really playing at a high level this season, and they are as talented as anyone in the AAA field.   They have two very difficult section games coming up, including a trip to Bishop Guilfoyle.  The Marauders beat CC by 25 earlier this year, look for the Red Devils to play better this time.

1. Bishop McCort 13-2
The Crushers have been rolling lately, with a nice seven game winning streak. They needed double overtime to knock off Central Cambria on the road in a very competitive game.  Crusher guards Imil Britt and Logan Kasper have been playing very well this season, and they'll need strong efforts from them this week. They Crushers welcome Altoona and Richland to start the week, then make the walk down to Johnstown High on Friday night.

2. Bishop Guilfoyle 9-4
BG and Westmont played one of the best games of the 2017 season this week, with Guilfoyle holding off the Hilltoppers 87-81 in triple overtime. The Marauders also went to Homer Center and beat the Wildcats by 21.  They play host to Central Cambria on Wednesday night in a big section I game.

3. Moshannon Valley 14-2
Moshannon Valley got upset by Mount Union by 2 points on Friday night for their second loss of the season.  They should get back on track with 2-15 Glendale coming to Houtzdale on Monday night.

4. United 11-7
United stays at the number four spot with two wins from last week.  The Lions defeated Blairsville and Glendale.  They need to keep playing well, as they are seeded fifth in the playoffs and 4th place gets a first round bye. Unfortunately, they have to play the top two teams in the league on the road this week starting with Saltsburg on Monday.

5. Purchase Line 10-7
Purchase Line has now won four games in a row. They are in a battle for that fourth first-round bye with conference mates United and Penns Manor. They play host to Harmony this week along with a trip to West Shamokin.  Big week for the Dragons.

1. Saltsburg 16-1
Saltsburg lost for the first time all year with a 65-63 setback to Ligonier on the road.  The game saw star player Nick Porter go down with an ankle injury, and he sat out against Homer Center in their next contest.  Porter's health is key to Saltsburg's playoff run, they'll need him back soon.

2. Ferndale 15-2
Ferndale lost for just the second time all year with a 40-33 loss to a very good Shanksville team in their gym.  It shouldn't take long for Ferndale to get a shot at redemption, as that will be the matchup for the WestPac championship at UPJ.  They go to North Star and Blacklick Valley this week, and I expect the Yellow Jackets to move to 17-2.

3. Williamsburg 9-6
Williamsburg had a very productive week, as they took down West Branch and Bellwood-Antis.  They have home games with Claysburg Kimmel and Moshannon Valley this week.  Obviously Mo Valley has been the team to beat this year in the ICC, so it'll be a big test for the Bucs.

4. Bishop Carroll 6-10
The Huskies beat 4A Somerset at home 88-75 to start last week. They then went to Westmont and took them to overtime before falling 88-80. Pretty high scoring week for BC, as the press must be working.  They have Forest Hills and Penn Cambria at home this week, two potentially winnable games.
