Depends what sport you're talking about...from a previous basketball discussion....

Do private schools have an advantage over public schools to appear in a state championship game? You decide. Here are the results from 1983-2009 for Class A and AA for boys and girls. Looks like alot of Bishops, Christians, Acadamies, and Cahothlic schools as both Winners and Runner ups. Maybe someone can come up with some statistics.

Don't forget the recent advent of "charter" schools in D12.

Put your 11 on the field and I'll put my 11 on the field. I don't care where they came from.

Anything else is looking for excuses.

Really, an inverse relationship of district square mile to classification?

Why? what would be the possible justification for that?

I guess to favor small enrolment -rural schools, like CR. They are already guaranteed to play in a District Champioship game for the next two years.

Maybe the PIAA could just legislate them a victory.
Why have classifications at all then. Maybe we shouldn't have any in any sports?

Answer a lot less than have been won by public schools.
I don't know what figures you are looking at but the ones I see on the piaa site differ from your facts.Look at all (boys and girls) titles won over the last ten years or longer if you wish.Privates win probabaly 60 to 75 percent of the championships. Then ask yourself what the ratio of private to public is,I'm guessing there are at least 5 or 6 times more public schools than private.Something is sure wrong with those numbers. If you are still a non believer pick up a usa today and look at the top teams ranked in the nation, funny thing the majority are privates. I think you get the theme,it isn't that hard to follow. The solution as I have stated before is simple, private playoffs for private schools, end of story.

southpaw wrote: In addition to using a school's enrollment for classification the PIAA should also include the school districts area in square miles as the second criteria. Rank the school's in terms of enrollment and area for the enrollment classification. The schools with the smallest square mileage would be ranked higher than a school with a larger area. Since private schools don't have an "area" they would have a square mileage of "1 square mile" or less. This would really level the playing field between urban/rural schools as well as public/private schools. The area a school district makes up is easily found on the PDE website and can't be "fudged". What do you guys think?
I think that is a great idea southpaw. I'm sure there could be a mathematical formula to take into consideration both sets of criteria and the problem of the private schools at the same time. The problem of course is that the PIAA is generally controlled by those in urban areas and they would not implement a program that would raise the classifications of their schools.

1. this is a football message board, while i appreciate all your hard work cutting and pasting the basketball scores, the discussion here is about the football teams and supposed dominance of the catholic schools. Between the three catholic schools in the LHAC they have one state title appearace and lost the game.

My question is that even if BM played up a classification this year, there would still be complaining because they are good enough to compete with the remaining three teams and obviously head and shoulders better then Richland. So next everyone will complain that they should be playing two levels up. Oh wait they already beat Johnstown, so they could actually win AAA if they were to compete at the level.

Name one player that played at BC that would have been a difference maker at Forest Hills. I actually have had this discussion with FH faithful and there is not one player mentioned that would have changed FH for the better. (The Lewis brothers who went to BM are mentioned but FH was solid at their positions while they were in high school)
