Shareef Blough ejection

Post by SportsFan04 »

Anyone that says people in this area officiate for the money obviously doesn't know what the officials are paid and that is not a complaint but after you factor in equipment and travel costs you net very little.

You can figure the first 4 games (very first 4) pay for your first set of equipment. Typically I replace my "expensive" stuff every 4-5 years. I'll get new pants (2) and jerseys (2) every other year. All told, I bet (without doing the math) we clear around $10-15 bucks a game.

Why is that? People don't want to admit mistakes?

The people "in charge" don't want to admit they make mistakes. That way they stay "in charge".
It ain't over until it's over.

Exactly! Officials, referees, and umpires don't want to admit they make mistakes because they want to remain in charge of as many sports as they can. They don't want to admit they get paid a generous wage for being involved with a sporting event because they want to continue to get paid. If those who officiate truly loved the game, they would respond to criticism, and they would ref or ump for FREE like so many of the coaches who volunteer their time to be a part of the action. Those coaches who volunteer don't end up with a net of $10 or $15 a game (which btw is complete bs). Volunteer coaches spend countless hours and money to help kids. Officials aren't involved unless they are getting paid. Officials are the last to arrive, and the first to leave, often in a rush so no one can see them. Which is completely ironic because they want to parade around on the field like they are big time and are really important, until the games are over and they run for cover. And they wonder why they get such a bad rap!

And by the way, any 'ethical' official who files a 1099 can deduct any of their equipment expenses and claim mileage... so much for the "we only break even" argument. :))

An official that doesn't "take charge" on the field of play isn't doing their job. After all they are " officiating" the event. If it was such a glamorous job that is sooo lucrative then why is their such a shortage of them? Are there officials that do like the spotlight and are out there to be noticed, yes. There are far more that are there for the love of competition and to help facilitate the game.

We tend to forget that in a varsity football game there are 22 players on the field, 2 head coaches, a dozen assistant coaches, 3 people running the chains, a game clock, a play clock, and dozens of subs. 7 officials are in charge of facilitating all of these, at once. This isn't a full time job but rather something they do after teaching, accounting, counseling, or whatever else their full time profession may be. They miss seeing things, misinterpret the rulebook, and even blow calls. Get over it!!!

To act like these officials aren't good people doing a thankless job is pathetic. I've seen family members upset because after 25 years of doing it, their body no longer allows them to keep officiating. Ive seen from friends and family death threat notes left of their car. What's worse than an arrogant official is an arrogant fan being unappreciative of the hard work and dedication they put in.

I've seen a fan follow a ref the whole way to his car mother effing him the whole way because he missed a pass interference call... Some people are pathetic. It's high school football not the Super Bowl.

Schools and little leagues, etc. don't provide enough security to make officiating, and in many cases coaching, worth the time and aggravation for many. I don't blame officials for trying to flee the scene as quickly as possible.

An Official should have a security escort no different than the opposing team as they load their bus. Not doing so is just asking for an incident.
