New PIAA Classification Ranges Posted

Post by DragonsDoExist »

PIAA posted the new ranges for the next 2 year cycle and the max # has been reduced in all classes. School enrollment #s and where they fall will be posted Friday. Here are the new ranges for football.

1A - Current = 000-140 New = 000-131
2A - Current = 141-200 New = 132-198
3A - Current = 201-282 New = 199-272
4A - Current = 283-397 New = 273-384
5A - Current = 398-563 New = 385-560
6A - Current = 564+ New = 561+

I took a look at current enrollment #s and the only D5/6 teams that would get bumped if their enrollment #s were to stay the same would be United, Blairsville, Windber & North Star all going from 1A to 2A. DuBois would go from 4A to 5A. Based on current enrollment BG would be 4 students from being 2A. Tussey & Conemaugh Township 1 away from 2A. Chestnut Ridge & Ligonier Valley 3 away from 3A. West Shamokin 2 away from 3A. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out Friday.
You play to win the game!!!

We would all like to think that BG would have to bump up Friday but there is no way they will be in 2A. They have the ABILITY to keep those numbers low.

This is idiotic! To think they are keeping numbers low to win championships is absurd! If they could fill those hallways they would!

I’m sure they would have to turn students away. The school really isn’t all that big if they accepted everyone that wanted to go there they would have to build a new school.

I’m sure the hallways do look full if you walked down them.

Do they have any big donors that are willing to pay to keep those numbers low? Some people do really like to win.

I do get a kick out of the "just two kids from being AA" or "just three kids over being A" talk that setting these numbers generates. If the PIAA went to twenty classes would we still be classifying schools as being small 17A or large 17A?

Yeah they just aren't turning kids away to stay single A.

I don't think it matters what they're doing. They should still play up irregardless.

I don't know/can't think of any other situation in any other sport or classification where the state tournament is a breeze compared to the regular season.....that just totally backward from the way it's supposed to be.  They go from battling with Forest Hills and Johnstown to Claysburg-Kimmel and Juniata Valley.  Why wouldn't they want to challenge themselves a little bit and bump to "AA"?  they have nothing in common with any of the "A" teams they are playing except enrollment.
Enrollment was fine in the 1930's thru 1960's when everyone was the same.  It was a perfect barometer to even playing fields and make fair competition among public schools.  Now we have privates, charters, reform schools, schools without boundaries in the cities, etc. and enrollment is no longer an 'end all' when it comes to classifying schools.
If they did it this way in College sports Notre Dame and Duke would be Division III for goodness sakes.
