Numbers again
Numbers again
The Jr High Team took the field with 13 players in uniform last night. Of the 13, four were eighth graders. They won 46-0. They have five games remaining. The Varsity team dressed 20 for its last game. Ten were seniors. 10 + 4 = 14.

This is a participation problem right? Not the school size. They're not much smaller than Meyersdale, Penns Manor, Homer Center, etc.knowitall wrote:The Jr High Team took the field with 13 players in uniform last night. Of the 13, four were eighth graders. What school is this?
Re: Numbers again
Conemaugh Valley. Enrollment numbers drop sharply after this year's seniors graduate. This senior class numbered over 100 at one time. The next six classes (using six year old numbers) have 51, 60, 47, 54, 51 and 62 students. My younger child's class is nearly 70% girls. My point is CV currently has 14 boys playing football now who will compose next year's high school team. Do you try to recruit from the hallways or do you get Plan B in place now?

Re: Numbers again
Maybe to field a full team, but some kids can't make it through the first day or week of camp w/o getting hurt. Used to be rub some dirt in it and take a lap, now it's concussion protocols every time a (almost) tackle is made or blown. Kids don't want to put in weight room time either.
It ain't over until it's over.

Re: Numbers again
We can blame laziness in the weight room on numbers being down, but population is the bigger issue and of course stories like this....

Re: Numbers again
I'm going to disagree, the number of kids missing due to concussion protocol is extremely small in fact maybe you could name a couple kids who were held out of games due to concussion protocol and as far as the weight room comment, now you have parents paying to take their kids to have specialized weightliftingManfred wrote:Maybe to field a full team, but some kids can't make it through the first day or week of camp w/o getting hurt. Re: Numbers again
Was just sent an article this week that stated that high school football is no longer the number one concussion sport in high school sports in the US. Wanna guess what passed football? Girls' soccer is the new number one. One doctor in the article was quoted as saying he would not allow his child to head a soccer ball until they were 18 years old.
