Best offensive line discussion

Post by EnzoLigoniere »

Obviously the Ligonier Valley oline is very talented this year, would like to hear some comparisons or other highly regarded olines in the last 10 years or so

2011 Tyrone. Line paved the way for the offense to amass 5348 yards.

To put that in perspective, 2014 BG had 6,500 total yards, crazy

Yea that's insane. Imo that's your 2 most complete teams this decade in the area. They both had everything. Not taking anything away from other teams just my opinion.

Agreed. HS football success is primarily dependent upon the Lines, both sides of the ball.
On Offense, if you have 5 studs up front, life is easier.
In 2009, and 2010, when FH won back to back D6 titles, they had 5 studs up front, and throw in a TE or 2 that could block.

Had to go to MaxPreps for this:
2009, 4535 total yards of offense.
2010, 5413 total yards of offense.

Good backs? Sure.
Great O-Lines? You better believe it.

Could basically walk up to the line, and say, "We're gonna run the ball right thru this hole on this play, and there's nothing you can do about it." (A slight exaggeration, haha!)

To me, Tyrone’s 2004 line was best I’ve seen to date... included PFN Defensive player of the year Terry Tate at G/C, also 3x 1st team all state Tyler Hoover, and Ralph Van Allman... They avg close to 280 up front and that was (tongue in cheek) ruined because Jake Houck only weighed 192 hahahahaha
The DLine destroyed Seton Lasalle that year who set a bunch of WPIAL all time offensive records. I still think Stull flamed at Pitt because he still has nightmares of #’s 55&77

Not to over complicate things, but there are a lot of variables involved in this discussion. i.e. talent, size, power, and toughness.
I've seen LV's line many times, and in terms of talent, size, and power - I've never seen a better high school O line.
BUT...
I don't see the toughness I saw on the smaller O lines of the 90s into the 00s (and probably earlier).

Not to be that old guy who exaggerates the superiority of the good old days. I do think kids today are probably generally bigger, stronger and maybe more talented. BUT they don't have the toughness we had in those days. I rarely see the same level of scrappiness and intensity on the O line. The desire to just destroy someone. Its there sometimes, but I don't see it nearly as much these days.

LV's line is definitely the strongest (4 500lb squatters and a 600+ lb squatter) and one of the biggest I've seen. But I'd like to put one of the United, FH or Tyrone lines of the 90s up against them. I think they'd be over matched by the toughness factor.
