I assume they wrestled off and kid that won moved forward at 285. But a coach can say to an athlete- Look, Johnny has worked hard at 285 all year long and deserves a shot at Districts. You Jimmy, got suspended from school for something really stupid, and I am not going to reward you to give you a better shot at winning states- you blew that opportunity when you got suspended. Or better yet, Jimmy's mom/dad could say, no, you wrestle at the weight you have been at all year long. No one is doing that here...called Entitlement....

I don’t think they’re mediocre in full, just mediocre to the other big schools they play from Harrisburg and Pittsburgh areas. State College does better but they’re significantly larger I believe.

Altoona is larger than State College enrollment wise. Altoona is the 21st largest football playing school in the state.

There's a good lesson for parents in there. You can send your kid to private lessons, pay to have them on a travel team, show-up for all the open gyms, etc.... Coaches want to win, and if that means playing the kid that doesn't do anything extra because he is better, well that's what most coaches will do.

Here's a few comparable WPIAL schools to Altoona and their football records:  Hempfield 3-7, Butler 0-10, Woodland Hills 5-7, Norwin 3-7.  Big schools can suck too.

I don't know where those numbers are from but I think Altoona may have messed up in their reporting.  They have 150 more males than females according to PIAA, but show basically 50/50 on the Future Ready site.  I have always thought State High was significantly bigger than Altoona.

According to that site, it shows a fairly large difference between the enrollments of the two districts.

I would think the PIAA enrollment page is accurate.

It seems your links include middle school and don’t separate from high school, could be why they’re different.
