Ham,
Just to correct your statement about the 1989 team. They took 4 teams from each classification (four from AA). The state was divided into four regions. They took one team from each region. Bedford was in the Pittsburgh region. In 1988 Bellwood beat Bedford in the last regular season game 28-22 to go to the playoffs. It was Bedford's only loss. In '89 Bedford was undefeated but a team from the WPIAL I believe, which had a couple of losses, got the invite because they had accumulated more points for beating bigger schools.

Success breeds success. Ridge has turned the corner in wrestling. They have built a nice program there. They need to do the same in football. Don't you think if someone like Shoemaker or Bailey (from FH) came in there that the program would get better?

Analyst I think you are close to being correct about the Bedford '89 team. I think there were only two regions East and West. The West had the top four of five AA teams that year in the state. I think Alliquipa and Wash were the top two with Bedford three. I think the Quips with Ty Law won the State Championship that year and Undefeated Bedford ended up being voted second in the final poll.

The '89 Bedford team was the best team from the District 5 Area Ever in my opinion.

Ham I agree somewhat of what you are saying about tradition and future teams doing better than the ones before them but you Ridge bashers are judging this years team on the past and that isn't fair to them. CR has improved each year as of lately and I find no reason to think that they will not win a playoff game in the near future, you know doing better than the teams before you. State championship isn't the topic at hand. Even the great undefeated Bedford team from last year didn't win a playoff game last year so anything can happen at any time. And yes I do think last years Bedford team should go up there with some of the best teams ever from D5, upset in the playoffs should not be held against them.

You may be right about that. I know they took four teams per class, but I can't remember who went instead of Bedford.

My recollection of Bedford playoff victories:

1985 BD beat Guilfoyle for Mountain Conference (10-0)
1986 BD beat Windber for D5, lost to VoTech for MC (9-3) (first year of district playoffs)
1987 BD beat Tussey for D5 (5-5-1)
1988 BD beat Ridge/Everett? for D5 (11-1) (first year of state playoffs)
1989 BD beat Everett for D5 (11-0)
1990 BD 0-9-1 (you guessed it, tied Ridge. Tell me it's not a mental thing)
1991 BD beat Ridge/Everett for D5, lost to FH in D5/6 (6-6)
1992 BD beat Ridge/Everett for D5, beat FH?? for D5/6, lost quarters(11-2)
1993 BD beat Ridge/Everett for D5, lost to FH in D5/6 (9-3?)

My memory gets even worse after this. Not quite sure when the current playoff format was started. As Ham stated, Bedford has won several first round games, but never made it past the semis. But I have always felt they have lost to really good teams, even last years CC team. The Bellwood and Westmont teams they lost to were both undefeated. Sure I'd love to see them advance further but it just hasn't worked out that way.
Bedford averages an undefeated team about every 3-4 years.
Ridge has one about every never. (i know they've had one or two)

I agree with you about the '89 team southpaw. It's the best team I have seen play in person (including many good FH teams).

Speaking of good athletes at Ridge. Southpaw and his brother weren't too shabby. Brent Kaufmann did ok. First team all-state I believe. Garrett Washington. Played at JMU and in Europe if I'm correct.

Does it even matter who wins district 5 -AA. Won't they just lose to Tyrone, or who ever the WPIAL champion.

1989 Bedford I agree is the best evr from the county. I don't know if you can put last years team up there as one of the best ever. They did however have one of the best players I've seen in a long time from Bedford. He reminded me alot of Bill Benbow on the field.
