Ligonier Valley sophomore knows where to find the football
10/27/2005,
The Associated Press:

(AP) — He's only a sophomore, but Ligonier Valley defensive back Brandon Boyd knows how to find the football.

With two games remaining, Boyd has intercepted 10 passes despite playing in a conference where teams do not throw the football much.

"Other than Blairsville, which airs it out some, I'd say the average is 20 passes a game for teams in the conference," Ligonier Valley coach Roger Beitel said. "Brandon also has three fumble recoveries for us."

Ligonier Valley, a Class (A) school in District #6, has 27 takeaways, including 21 interceptions.

"We were 1-8 and dead last in takeaways last year," said Beitel, whose team is 4-4 this season but will probably not make the district playoffs. "It's been a remarkable turnaround."

Boyd, who is 5-foot-10, 145 pounds, plays cornerback and is a backup quarterback and running back.

"He just has a knack for knowing where the ball is going to be thrown — one of those things you can't teach a player," Beitel said. "In junior high last year, he broke a bone and had a cast from his hand up to his elbow on one arm and still intercepted four passes."

While records are sketchy at Ligonier Valley, Beitel is almost positive the 10 interceptions are a school record.

"We're looking into that, but I can't imagine anyone having more," Beitel said. "And we still have the two games left, so Brandon might not be done."

BACK ON THE SIDELINES:@ Washington High School football coach Bill Britton expects to be back on the sidelines Friday when the Little Prexies take on Aliquippa in a District #7 Class (AA) first-round playoff game.

Britton has not coached the team for the past month while teachers in the district were on strike. Earl Finney, West Greene's coach in the 1980s and a Washington assistant, took over as interim head coach and has Washington on a four-game winning streak.

NOT ON THE SIDELINES:@ Pennsbury football Galen Snyder will probably not be on the sidelines when his team plays at Abington on Friday. The Pennsbury teachers went on strike earlier this week.

The district has decided to continue all athletic programs with administrators serving as coaches. Pennsbury defensive coordinator Shawn Neely, an assistant principal at Pennsbury West, will serve as acting coach.

HE'S NO. 1:@ Ron Cohen of George Washington became the career leader in Philadelphia Public League coaching victories when his team defeated Mastbaum Tech 42-14. Cohen has a 185-48-2 record in 21 seasons. He broke the record of Al Angelo, whose teams were 184-39-5 in 21 seasons at Frankford.
