Week 14 Picks.

Post by The Ancient Enemy »

MAC CHAMPIONSHIP:

Thursday Night:
================

Akron vs. Northern Illinois:
----------------------------------
- Bigtime quarterback Luke Getsy has almost singlehandedly led one of the worst teams in all of football into the MAC title game in his first year at the helm. Getsy had to leave Pitt, who lost to Ohio and Rutgers and is not bowl eligible, because he was not good enough to play there. The second best QB on that depth chart, Tyler Palko, will be watching his former teammate and will hopefully learn a thing or two. But alas, give me No Illy by 45.

Friday Night:
==========

Louisiana Tech vs. Fresno State:
--------------------------------------
- I am really excited about this game.

...

.....

........

Fresno by 50.

Thursday night

Mid American Conference (MAC) Title game
Akron Zips vs. Northern Illinois Huskies (7:30 pm)
Nice job by Akron to get into the MAC title game, but it's not quite enough. They'll finish second in the MAC at 6-6, and won't even make a bowl. Is it worth it? In other words, NIU by 10.

Friday night

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Fresno State Bulldogs (9:00 pm)
Bulldogs clinch the WAC title with a win, even though they fell flat against Nevada. Give me the Liberty bowl bound Fresno State Bulldogs by 21.

Saturday

Conference USA Title Game
Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. UCF Golden Knights (12:00 pm)
UCF is a good team, and it is a great accomplishment by George O'Leary to get them here after losing 17 straight games. My mind says they should win this game, but my gut says Tulsa will win. That's what happened when I picked Alabama (against LSU and Auburn) when my intuition was telling me they would lose. Of course, Alabama lost. So as much as I want to pick Central Florida here, my gut is telling me Tulsa will win. So, Tulsa by 3.

Big 12 Title Game
Texas Longhorns vs. Colorado Buffaloes (1:00 pm)
I don't even know if it's worth playing this game. However, I still think it's a bit much to give Colorado 28 points to start with. The Buffs may be bad, but they aren't THAT bad. Colorado will cover. Texas by 24.

Army Black Knights vs. Navy Midshipmen (2:30 pm)
This is what it is all about, every year. Army has a chance in this game, but I don't think hiding the trophy and leaving a note that says that Army figured they'd take it a little prematurely since they're going to win on Saturday anyways was a wise thing. This will, if possible, get Navy even more fired up about this game. So, I would think about picking Army, but that stunt lessened their chances considerably. Navy by 6.

UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans (4:30 pm)
The question isn't whether UCLA can pull the upset, so much as to whether UCLA's defense could stop my grandmother from scoring a touchdown. The answer to both questions is no. USC by 17.

Southeastern Conference Title Game
Georgia Bulldogs vs. LSU Tigers (6:00 pm)
Georgia is good, and will likely have the crowd advantage (since the game is being played in Atlanta). However, as good as D.J. Shockley is, LSU's defense is a smidgen better. Despite that, my gut says Georgia by 3.

MOST INSIGNIFICANT GAME OF THE WEEK:
Middle Tennessee Blud Raiders at Florida International Golden Panthers (7:00 pm)
Neither team is bowl eligible, and neither team is playing for a championship, and they are both Sun Belt teams that could probably ALMOST beat Temple. Nevertheless, they are playing for one more win, and for pride, honor, and respect (whatever is afforded to Sun Belt teams). Anyways, give me Middle Tennessee by 4.

West Virginia Mountaineers at South Florida Bulls (7:30 pm)
West Virginia's Pat White is not very good at throwing the ball. Then again, when he can rush for 200 yards against the Pittsburgh Panthers, it doesn't really matter. It will matter in a BCS bowl game against the SEC champion, but it doesn't matter in Big East play. West Virginia by 21.

Louisville Cardinals at Connecticut Huskies (7:45 pm)
UConn by 13. Wait, you say this isn't a basketball game? Oh man, this could get ugly. Fortunately, it's being played in Storrs, which makes things a LITTLE better for Connecticut. Instead of losing by 40 or 50 (the case if it were being played at Papa John's stadium in Louisville), Connecticut will only lose by about 3 or 4 touchdowns, since they have homefield and it gets rather cold up there. However, that would be the case if Brian Brohm were playing. Since Louisville has to resort to a backup QB as well, I will take the Cardinals by ONLY 17 points.

Atlantic Coast Conference Title Game
Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Florida State Seminoles (8:00 pm)
This game would be much more interesting if FSU hadn't packed it in upon winning the Atlantic division of the conference. It's hard to get fired up about a big game when you've already been dogging it after winning the division. I mean, look at what happened when FSU played a rivalry game against Florida. They got their butts kicked. And if they could get fired up and play good football against a rival, they won't be able to do it against Virginia Tech either. Oh, and Florida State goes to the MPC Computer Bowl, Boise will beat them too. But for now, it's just Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech by 16.

San Diego State Aztecs at Hawaii Warriors (11:05 pm)
Hawaii may have an advantage in having home field 3,000 miles from the mainland, with opposing teams having not only to deal with Hawaii fans, but also with jet lag and perhaps unusually warm temperatures. Nonetheless, even though Hawaii is favored, San Diego State is a sleeper team. They might even put together a winning season next year. They'll get a little jump on things by winning a tough road game here, in the last game of the regular college football season. San Diego State by 7.
