GIRLS: SPRING GROVE 55, HERSHEY 47
Ruby bombs Hershey with "7" treys.........
How many points did she finish with? And how many of those were 3-pointers?
That was the buzz around the gymnasium last night after Spring Grove won the Hershey Holiday Tournament by defeating the host Trojans 55-47.
Simply, it was one of the more remarkable long-distance shooting displays in a while.
Rockets sophomore guard Sam Ruby made seven treys, including several from obscene distances behind the line, and as a team Spring Grove was 9-for-16 (56 percent) shooting three bombs.
Ruby finished with a career-high 26 points.
And these weren't wide open looks, either.
Maybe once Ruby was left open enough to call it a clean look.
During a stretch late in the first and early in the second quarters it didn't matter how tight the defense was. Or how far Ruby was from the basket.
She nailed five in a row without touching the rim.
"We closed out on all of them. Maybe, just maybe, there was one we didn't get out on," Hershey coach Will Wenninger said. "Our kids are resilient and fought hard. They didn't quit.
"[Spring Grove] shot the ball pretty well, huh?"
Only from long distance, though. Spring Grove was just 8-for-22 on two-point shots.
Those treys made all the difference.
Ruby started her assault late in the first quarter with Hershey ahead 11-6. The Trojans were having their way on the offensive end by getting the ball inside and drawing fouls.
Her pair of 3s in the final 75 seconds, the second coming with 10 seconds showing, put Spring Grove ahead for good 12-11.
Ruby added three more in the second quarter to help the Rockets grab a 24-21 halftime lead.
Four more treys, two each by Ruby and Carly Myers, in the third quarter allowed the Rockets to stretch their lead to double digits.
Then just before the third quarter ended, Ruby drilled the final dagger by banking home a leaner with :01.6 showing and was fouled. She dropped the free throw to give Spring Grove a 45-32 cushion.
Playing from that far behind doesn't fit the Trojans' game. Hershey stuck to its game plan of pounding it inside, and worked all night. The Trojans finished 30-for-37 from the foul line, but managed just eight field goals.
Trojans junior Lindsey Barsanti poured in a team-high 18 points that included a 14-for-16 night from the foul line.
LOWER DAUPHIN HOLIDAY:
Carlisle played its best half of the season in the championship game and jumped in front of Manheim Twp. by 19 points at intermission on its way to a 63-53 victory. In the consolation game, the host Falcons used a pair of free throws from Kari Skitka with 20 seconds left in overtime to lift LD past Shippensburg 33-32. Skitka finished with a team-high 14 points. Abby Myers hit a trey at the buzzer for the Greyhounds to force overtime.
