Final "2005" Super "25" Football Rankings....

How'd we do: Ten teams appeared in all (14) rankings this season, including nine of the top 10. No. #1 Lakeland held the top spot for the entire season. Thirteen schools from the preseason rankings wound up in the final rankings.

Player of the week: Quarterback Greg McElroy helped No. #2 Southlake (Texas) Carroll win its sixth overall state championship Saturday and earned game M.V.P. in a 34-20 win over Katy. McElroy completed 21 of 31 passes for 328 yards and four TDs. He finished the season with 56 TD passes, a 5-(A) state record.

Extra points: Toby Gerhart concluded his career as California's all-time leading rusher as Norco beat Temescal Canyon (Lake Elsinore) 28-14 in the CIF-Southern Section, Division V final. Gerhart, who's headed to Stanford for football and baseball, rushed for 256 yards and scored Norco's four TDs. Gerhart finished his career with 9,651 yards, third all-time according to the 2005 High School Sports Record Book. ...

QB Leroy Diggs of No. #6 South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) ran for 150 yards and scored four times in a 52-14 win over Meridian in the Class 5-(A) final. Teammate Ricky Sanford added 210 yards rushing and three TDs. South Panola coach Ricky Woods is 59-1 in four seasons. ...

WR Hakeem Nicks had eight receptions for 205 yards and scored twice as No. #3 Independence (Charlotte) won its sixth straight state title, beating New Bern 38-19. Nicks, the game's MVP, finished the season with 20 TDs and 1,814 receiving yards. ...

The Texas Class 5-(A), Division II final between No. #2 Southlake Carroll and Katy drew 29,840 to Irving's Texas Stadium. ...

RB Brandon Johnson had 245 yards and four TDs, leading No. #18 Dominguez (Compton, Calif.) over then-No. #11 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) 41-14 in the CIF-Southern Section, Division III final. Notre Dame had its win streak stopped at "35" games.

Previous: Not ranked. Won CIF-North Coast Section 4-(A) championship.

24. Westfield, Spring, Texas (11-1)
Previous: 24. Advanced to Class 5-(A), Division I state semifinals. Won District "22"-5-(A) and Region 3 titles.

25. St. Peter's Prep, Jersey City, N.J. (12-0)
Previous: Not ranked. Result: d. then-No. #16 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey) 22-15 in Non-Public, Group "4" final.
