CUMBERLAND VALLEY 70, STEEL-HIGH 61
Eagles rally in 4th
Defense helps C.V. overcome 5-point deficit .....

The Patriot-News:

Trailing Steel-High by five entering the fourth quarter of last night's game, Cumberland Valley swung it on one of those intangibles.

As the young Rollers struggled to put together an end run, the Eagles rallied by shooting the lights out of the Benkovic Gym in their own businesslike way.

The result was a 70-61 win for Cumberland Valley in a Mid-Penn Commonwealth boys' basketball game last night in Steelton.

"We just happened to hit the big shots," Eagles coach John Albert said. "That's how you win close games."

The Eagles (5-6, 2-4) outscored the Rollers 29-15 in the final frame.

"I thought we picked up a little defensively in the fourth quarter," Albert said. "It wasn't great defense, but it was a little more than we gave them early."

"We fought hard but gave them some easy baskets, too many layups," Steel-High coach Mike Pilsitz said. "We're trying to get to 12 [wins], and we'll see how it goes."

Both teams begin the new year with fresh determination to reach .500 in time to make districts.

The pressure is particularly intense for the Rollers (4-7, 2-4), the two-time defending District 3-(AAA) champs and the reigning PIAA-(AAA) champs.

"I would expect these guys, when they put that 'Rollers' across their chest, to win a close game," Pilsitz said. "I think we're much better than we've played to this point."

Pilsitz, in his first year, clearly inherited the mother of all rebuilding jobs from Rick Binder.

Four starters and two 2,000-point, NCAA Division I recruits graduated after last year's state final.

The football team's lengthy run into the playoffs further slowed the basketball team's development, but Pilsitz is having none of it."

I told the kids, 'Make no excuses and accept no excuses,'" Pilsitz said. "They have as many hours logged [playing basketball] as anyone, so they should be ready to grind it out."

These young Rollers went back and forth with CV early, leading after the first quarter and then trailing 27-26 at the half before opening the third quarter with an 11-2 run.

"We go through spells where we're having problems," said Pilsitz, who got 16 points from Jerel Layman. "We're looking for someone to score out there."

Lance Chisholm scored six of his game-high 19 points for the Rollers during that third-quarter swing.

"Those kids played well," said Albert, a Steelton native. "They're a nice ballclub, and I think they'll come around."

Down 46-41 after three, the Eagles turned it around when they opened the fourth with an 11-2 run.

"I just told them we had to pick it up," Albert said. "We were getting a lot of good looks, just make sure you relax and shoot the ball."

Andrew Dentler led a balanced Eagles attack with 13 points off the bench. Brian Reed added 12 points, Steve Kirkpatrick scored 11 and Kevin Dederer had 10.
