New Castle to Stay Put in W.P.I.A.L. Boys Basketball

It's good news for Class (AAA) boys basketball teams and bad news for Class (AAAA) Section# 3. The New Castle Red Hurricane enrollment numbers dropped them to Class (AAA), but they have decided to 'play-up' in Class (AAAA) for the next two year cycle.

New Castle High Athletic Director Sam Flora told MSA Sports that the necessary paperwork was filed in December with the W.P.I.A.L. Flora added that the Canes have long established rivalries with the other Section #3 teams, such as North Allegheny, Butler and Shaler, and that some of those rivalries were lost when the football team dropped to Triple-A.

New Castle has made the playoffs '13" consecutive years and has won (5) Quad-A titles during that time. The Canes are currently in 3rd place in Section #3 with a 3-2 mark.

Here are the W.P.I.A.L. football enrollment numbers with the teams in each class and the number of males. The football steering committee will meet on Wednesday to align each classification. The Board of Control will then approve the final alignment on Tuesday, January 17th.

MSA Sports will have the final realignment announced after the Board of Control meeting on the 17th.
