Shamrocks ride out wild Keystone finish....
Wednesday, January 11, 2006

The Patriot-News:

Brian Morris sank a pullup jumper that put Trinity ahead of Susquehanna Twp. by two with 40 seconds left.

For Susquehanna Twp., which had rallied from a seven-point deficit over the previous two minutes, time was running out.

For the Shamrocks, time was not running out quite fast enough.

Trinity and Susquehanna Twp. combined for three timeouts with 40 seconds remaining. All the Indians got out of them was a bad shot, but they hauled in the rebound.

A held ball gave Susquehanna Twp. possession and led to Trinity taking another timeout with eight tenths of a second remaining.

Trinity stole the inbounds pass and only then were the Shamrocks able to run out the clock.

That turnover gave the Shamrocks a 58-56 win in last night's Mid-Penn Keystone boys' basketball showdown in Shiremanstown.

"I was a nervous wreck with 0.8 to go," Trinity coach Larry Kostelac said. "They got eight points in that second half on out-of-bounds plays.

"Fortunately at the end of the game the ball bounced our way and we were able to win the game."

Trinity (11-0, 8-0) regained control of the seesaw battle with an 8-2 surge midway through the fourth quarter.

The Shamrocks shot 4-for-5 from the line during that two-minute swing and got a three-point play from Anthony Gabriel.

Gabriel led the Shamrocks with 22 points, matching the total put up by Indians' warrior Kirk Peters.

"You know they're going to come after you," Kostelac said. "The pressure's on, they have nothing to lose and they were going 100 miles an hour."

Trinity led 56-49 with 2:40 remaining but Susquehanna Twp. (11-2, 7-1) answered with seven straight points to tie it at 56 with 55 ticks on the clock.

Matt Jones made a three-point play and Peters found his way inside for back-to-back layups to knot the game.

Morris, who finished with 13 points and three 3-pointers, sank his decisive jumper and then the Indians took their shots at a win that simply refused to roll their way.

"A lot of miscues," Susquehanna Twp. coach Emery Cook said. "A lot of sets that went awry. A lot of bad fumbling of the basketball, bad handling of the basketball that didn't allow us to get a good look at the basket in 40 seconds."

The Indians, who spent much of the game answering Trinity's runs, eventually made their offense more deliberate. That helped them to find better shots and even an occasional putback through the tall trees of Trinity.

But each team held up against the other's strength. Kostelac complained that his team, with its considerable size advantage, gave up too many rebounds.

"In the fourth quarter when they got back into it they really dominated us on the glass," Kostelac said.

Trinity's starters stand 5-11, 6-2, 6-6, 6-6 and 6-6. Susquehanna Twp.'s are 5-10, 5-11, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3.

But the Indians got three rebounds to Trinity's one in the final two minutes.

"With our size and our athletic ability that should not happen," Kostelac said.

And Cook complained that his guard-oriented attack didn't handle the ball well at crucial times.

"We had several muffs of the ball tonight," Cook said. "I give [Trinity] a lot of credit for forcing those turnovers."
