W.P.I.A.L.'s New H.S. Football Realignment....
WPIAL FOOTBALL REALIGNMENT
1/22/2006 -
The W.P.I.A.L. Board of Control has unanimously passed the new football alignment that will be used for the 2006 and 2007 high school football seasons. Once again, Class (AAAA) and Class (AA) was the focus for most of the changes.
Class (AAAA) once again has only "23" teams as it did in 2004 and 2005. However instead of using three conferences as it did the last two years, the W.P.I.A.L. will go back to a four conference alignment, with the conference of six teams and one of five teams.
While there was hope that Erie McDowell would move into the W.P.I.A.L. for football only until District #10 rejected the request last week, District #7 officials still hope the Trojans can be part of the W.P.I.A.L. schedule.
District #10 officials will meet on Wednesday in the hope of allowing Erie McDowell a chance to play five exhibition games against the teams from the Quad North. The move would allow the current Class (AAAA) schedule to be balanced and also possibly pave the wave for the Trojans to move into the district for football only down the road.
Also in Class (AAAA), W.P.I.A.L. executive director Larry Hanley pointed out that the league is going back to a more geographic friendly set up for conferences rather than the big school-small school format used over the last four years.
In Class (AA), there are a total of "45" teams, giving all five conference nine teams. This means all but one team in each section will be playing conference games in Week #1. The good news is the current wild card format is now on a balanced level across all five conferences.
