Delone Catholic Wants R-E-S-P-E-C-T !!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't write off 13-7 Delone Catholic just yet ????????????
The Patriot-News:
There are only two teams with more than four losses in The Patriot-News girls' basketball state rankings this week.
And each resides in Class (AA) -- the most competitive class in the state top to bottom.
One is even in the top "10". And it has more losses than any of the "98" teams listed.
Delone Catholic, the three-time defending P.I.A.A. Class (AA) state champions, currently have seven losses and if it were any other team would not be anywhere on this radar screen with a 13-7 record.
But beware, this team looks nothing like a seven-loss team these days.
When the calendar turned from 2005 to '06, the Squirettes ("Nice Name"), stood at just 4-6.
Only a fool would have written them off at that point. Perhaps some did. But with the best player on the floor almost every night in senior Meredith Cox, never count this team out.
Especially not now, after posting an impressive 55-46 victory over Harrisburg last Saturday night at Hempfield.
The win over the Cougars capped a week where Delone needed double overtime to win at York Suburban and edged Fairfield by a bucket the night before.
One of the hallmarks of this team during its current run has been the ability to find a way to win tight games.
Looks like the Squirettes are at it again. The winning streak is six straight and 9-1 in the their last 10.
"That was a quality win. We really needed something like this," Delone coach Gerry Eckenrode said after knocking off Harrisburg. "It's what we've been looking for all year. We played team basketball. It was a more consistent effort."
Obviously, the key for Delone is Cox. Trailing the Cougars by a point entering the fourth quarter Saturday night, the Georgetown-bound senior knocked down three triples and totaled 11 of her 15 points to ice it.
The other important cog for the Squirettes is 6-1 junior center Felice Herman. When she's on the floor, Delone is a much stronger team on both ends. Everyone will focus on Cox. But in some respects, what Herman brings to the table in the overall picture is just as important.
ADD ONE TO THE LIST: Congratulations to Fairfield senior Lauren Beckley on joining the list of 2,000-point scorers last Saturday in a 55-9 win over Mt. Calvary. She finished the contest with 22 points in only three quarters.
CHANGE AT THE TOP: Sure, Greensburg Central Catholic lost to a power team from West Virginia, its first setback of the season. Oakland Catholic had to rally from a double-digit deficit to beat this team. But it was still a loss, and that allowed Westmont Hilltop to take over the top spot in Class (AA). The Hilltoppers are the defending state runners-up.
