When first asked about moving from left tackle to right tackle while trying to learn right guard at the same time, freshman Michael Turkovich admitted to plenty of confusion. He knew why he was doing it, he just didn't understand what he was doing.
That's understandable said offensive line coach John Latina. And for now, it's also OK.
"For a young lineman that should be confusing," Latina said. "So many times guards and tackles work together. When you're a tackle and you don't understand the guard's problems, it's like the left hand not working with the right hand."
As for where Latina ultimately sees Turkovich developing, he said his future is more likely at guard. Latina said senior Brian Mattes is also better suited at guard while Paul Duncan is a more natural tackle.
"Brian is so much better because he played four positions for us last year," Latina said. "He may be the best coach of the linemen in terms of being able to teach everything because he understands the intricacies at every position."
