After Week # 5 & a look ahead
Rankings after week five.....
Big Schools
1. State College; 4-1
Week Five Result: Lost to Bishop McDevitt 24-16 Week Six Opponent: Carlisle
The Little Lions lost a close one to the Crusaders last week but I would look for them to rebound against a winless Carlisle team and stay on top of the big school standings.
2. Huntingdon; 4-1
Week Five Result: Beat Punxsutawney 24-7 Week Six Opponent: Clearfield
The Bearcats take on another District 9 opponent, but this one is a bit tougher in 4-1 Clearfield. This should be an outstanding game between two evenly matched teams and it could go either way. Tough game to call.
3. Johnstown; 5-0
Week Five Result: Beat Somerset 47-19 Week Six Opponent: Bishop Carroll
Times are tough for Bishop Carroll this year but don't think Bob Arcurio is going to look past the Huskies. BC has beaten JHS four of the last five times these teams have faced off including a shutout just a year ago. Look for the coaches and players to have very good memories and bring their "A" game to Trojan Stadium in a game that is part of PCN's Game of the Week coverage (tape delayed broadcast Saturday).
4. Altoona; 3-2
Week Five Result: Beat Chambersburg 49-14 Week Six Opponent: Central Dauphin
This Mountain Lion squad is desparately seeking some consistency. A win over a 3-2 opponent in CD will get them on the right track. Coach Riccio's squad needs to win to keep pace in those crazy District # 3/6 (AAAA) playoff standings.
5. Central Mountain; 3-2
Week Five Result: Beat Williamsport 22-19 Week Six Opponent: Indian Valley
After a close call against the Millionaires of Williamsport, CM gets back to the District #6 scene with an old nemesis from their (AAA) days: Indian Valley. The Wildcats should win this one, but it will be close.
6. Hollidaysburg; 3-2
Week Five Result: Beat Central Dauphin East 32-20 Week Six Opponent: Mount Carmel
This would be a huge win against (AAAA) Williamsport as far as the Tigers' standing in the playoff race. However, CD East is a bit tougher squad than DuBois so this will be a battle. Look for these two former Mid Penn foes to take it down to the wire.
7. Bellefonte; 2-3
Week Five Result: Beat Indian Valley 55-54 Week Six Opponent: Tyrone
Hopefully the Red Raiders still have some points left in their offense after last week's shootout! They're going to need all the help they can get against the mighty Tyrone Golden Eagles.
8. Indian Valley; 2-3
Week Five Result: Lost to Bellefonte 55-54 Week Six Opponent: Central Mountain
If IV is to stay alive in the playoff race, they have to pull out all the stops and get the (AAAA) points for beating CM.
9. Lewistown; 0-5
Week Five Result: Lost to Clearfield 31-0 Week Six Opponent: Punxsutawney
Shut out for the third straight week and the fourth time this season, the Panthers face an opponent they can matchup against in the 1-4 Chucks. That being said, I think Punxsy will prevail.
10. Somerset; 0-5
Week Five Result: Lost to Johnstown 47-19 Week Six Opponent: Richland
The Richland Rams are one of the few teams that the Eagles have a chance of sneaking out a victory against. However, I just don't see it happening and I foresee an 0-10 campaign for Steve Costea's club.
(There are "3" District #6 teams that compete in (AAAA) and "7" that compete in (AAA).
No District # 5 teams compete at either classification so this list will always have the same schools listed, just the order can change. For the current enrollment period, Huntingdon is actually a Class (AA) school that volunteers to play up to AAA)
Small Schools
1. Tyrone; 5-0
Week Five Result: Beat Philipsburg-Osceola 31-0 Week Six Opponent: Bellefonte
John Franco's squad should have little trouble defeating this Red Raiders squad and in the process, they'll pick up the bonus points for beating a (AAA) school.
2. Bellwood Antis; 4-1
Week Five Result: Beat Southern Huntingdon 27-9 Week Six Opponent: Philipsburg-Osceola
Tough two game stretch for P-O as they played Tyrone a week ago. I look for a similar result against B-A this week as Coach Hayes' squad improves to 5-1.
3. Forest Hills; 4-1
Week Five Result: Beat Cambria Heights 47-14 Week Six Opponent: Cent. Cambria
A little bit better competition for Don Bailey's Rangers but not by much. CC was run out of the stadium by Johnstown and I would expect a similar performance by the Rearick and the Rangers.
4. Bishop McCort; 4-1
Week Five Result: Beat Richland 47-6 Week Six Opponent: Westmont
Ken Salem must do everything he can to focus his team on this game and not look ahead to week seven and city rival Johnstown. Although the Hilltoppers aren't as good as they were a year ago, Price Field on a Saturday afternoon can be a tough place to play. Anything less than the best from the Crimson Crushers and it could be upset-city.
5. Windber; 5-0
Week Five Result: Beat Berlin 46-0 Week Six Opponent: Conemaugh Township
Coach Demarco's Zero Tolerance defense continues to shut out WestPAC opponents. It will most likely continue against the woeful CT Indians this weekend.
6. Portage; 5-0
Week Five Result: Beat Conemaugh Valley 54-6 Week Six Opponent: Berlin
The Mustangs will continue to roll against Berlin. Coach Gouse's ground game will rack up the yards against the Mountaineers this week.
7. Penn Cambria; 4-1
Week Five Result: Beat Central 50-0 Week Six Opponent: Cambria Heights
Don't be surprised if Ernie Fetzer's Panthers score "50" again, this time against the lowly CH Highlanders.
8. Marion Center; 5-0
Week Five Result: Beat Northern Cambria 40-21 Week Six Opponent: Laurel Valley
The Stingers continue to be the team to beat in the Heritage. LV Rams will give them a tough game as always, but look for MC to come out on top and be 6-0 at week's end.
9. Southern Huntingdon; 4-1
Week Five Result: Lost to Bellwood-Antis 27-9 Week Six Opponent: Mount Union
B-A is a very tough opponent, no shame in dropping your first loss to them. Look for the Rockets to rebound and rebound big against the Mount Union Trojans.
10. Purchase Line; 4-1
Week Five Result: Beat United 41-6 Week Six Opponent: Penns Manor
This tenth spot was the toughest one to fill so far this year. As you will see below there are some good teams trying to crack the rankings. I give the slimmest of edges to PL. The Dragons beat fellow 4-1 Ligonier Valley and the Heritage is a better conference than the ICC. Of course, this could change in the weeks to come, but for right now it's Purchase Line.
Below are other teams for consideration:
Meyersdale is 5-0 but if you read my comments last week, you'll see that I'm still not convinced. They did receive honorable mention in the Patriot-News' statewide poll though. Ligonier Valley, Northern Bedford and Tussey Moutain are all 4-1. Like I said above, PL beat Ligonier Valley in head-to-head and I think the Heritage is a better conference than the ICC.
(There are "3" District #5 schools that compete at (AA) and "10" in Class (A) . In District # 6, "13" schools are at (AA) while "24" are at the Class (A) level.)
