W.P.I.A.L. Big Game Hunting: Week #6
10/5/2006 -

These will be the games that match-up the top teams, the top players or maybe a rivalry with a lot on the line.

The MSA Sports Network “Game of the Week”:

#2 Woodland Hills Wolverines vs. #6 Gateway Gators

Class (AAAA) – Big East Conference
Gateway High School
7:30 Friday

Radio:1360 WPTT and at http://www.msasports.net
Announcers:Paul Paterra and Steve Nagler

Early control of the Quad East Conference race is at stake in this marquee match-up. Some consider this one of the better rivalry but I disagree. These two haven't played a competitive game since 1987 and 1988.

Gateway fields an extremely young team including quarterback Robbie Kalkstein who is just a freshman. Kalkstein has thrown for 650 yards and six scores including key receptions to Division I prospect Jon Ditto.

Woodland Hills won this meeting last season, 48-28, after a two loss year to the Gators in 2004.

The Wolverines are ranked #2 and will be bolstered with the return of RB Marcel Farrish who missed the Wolverines 28-0 win against Fox Chapel. QB Vondre Griffin finally found TE Rob Gronkowski for multiple scores and if those two continue to click that could be one of the top combination in the WPIAL.

Other Top Games:

#6 Highlands Golden Rams vs. #2 Pine-Richland Rams

Class (AAA) – Greater Allegheny Conference
Pine-Richland High School
7:30 Friday

Radio:Fox Sports 970 and at http://www.msasports.net
Announcers: Rob Matzie and John Lee

MSA Sports will be at P-R for the 50th Anniversary party of the football program and the game should live up to the pomp and ceremony.

Both teams have been mild surprises in 2006. Pine-Richland was depleted last year by graduation, but has reloaded instead of rebuilt and Highlands is coming off some disappointing seasons.

One of the biggest surprises for P-R is at quarterback where Spencer Whipple has thrown for 660 yards and seven scores. Top target is Matt Klimczyk, one of the WPIAL's top receivers, with 26 catches for 388 yards and seven scores.

Highlands has done it with defense in 2006 giving up 24 points (including shutouts in their last 3) while averaging over 30 a game offensively.

#3 Serra Catholic Eagles vs. #4 Beth-Center Bulldogs

Class (A) – Black Hills Conference
Beth-Center High School
7:30 Friday

Radio:LIVE at http://www.msasports.net
Announcers: Matt Vandriak and Scott Stiller

In what might be the best game of the weekend, the Bulldogs and Eagles get together for what might be the Black Hills Conference championship. Defenses should be the key. Serra Catholic has given up just 59 points in 2006 and the Bulldogs have given up no more than 13 in any game.

The teacher's strike at Beth-Center may be an off the field issue for players and some football staff.

#2 Clairton Bears vs. #6 Riverview Raiders

Class A - Eastern Conference
Riverside Park
12:00 pm Saturday

Radio:LIVE at http://www.msasports.net
Announcers: Don Rebel and Mike Azadian

Don't let the records confuse you but there is a lot of distance between these two Eastern Conference teams.

Clairton has knocked off top teams the past two weeks while Riverview hs played the cellar dwellers. Last week Zaire Washington ran for 166 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Bears as they came from behind to beat Springdale 29-20.

Riverview knocked off Leechbur 29-6 as Sid Facaros ran for 101 yards and a score and opened the scoring with a 68-yard interception return, and later scored on a 27-yard run.

Riverside Park is one of the nicest places to watch a Saturday game in the fall.
