why Berlin? nice home game for meyersdale. does not matter Clairton should still win. but winning the wpial has been known to deflate teams before.

I thought they would at least play at somerset or something. isn't berlin kinda small for a game that will have this kind of turnout?
It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

IMHO...The Field is grass and it could neutralize Clairton's Speed...these kids took a bus ride to Heinz to see...They know that will help them...I am guessing ,going by from what I saw of Windber last year, The raiders probably are not as fast overall at the skill positions but with a few that can go 70 yards plus compared to 4-5 for the Bears……Could be a tough “surprise” first round game…but the Bears should get enough focus to put it away by the end of the third...I think because the Bears have not won a WPIAL title in a while they could have the post heinz hangover like Duquesne had back in '93 when Laural valley played them tough

now ike did u mean '03 or did u mean '93? because 93 is a freakin long time ago, 03 is pretty far off as well...these teams are this year's teams not last year or the year before...

i think this should be a good game...to get to this game, you have to be a good team and beat good teams, you dont get here by luck...not to mention in h.s. football anyone can win any given friday/sat/day...i think this should be a close game...tho clairton probably had a tougher road to travel and should win in the end...good luck and go get 'em meyersdale..

Well, The Harrisburg Sports Writers are NOT picking Meyersdale
Here's what they have to say:

P.I.A.A. PLAYOFFS

CLASS (AAAA) District #3-6 Championship State College 26, Governor Mifflin 21 The weather report screams "running game!" and that's what Mifflin and Dustin Manz do best. But, somehow, we think State High will find a way to win.

District #1 Championship Pennsbury 26, RIDLEY 14 Pennsbury is like a groaning bulldozer. Push, push, push. OK, back up. Now push, push, push.

P.I.A.A. quarterfinals Liberty 41, Frankford 8 Philly champs can't feel bad about having no answer for Liberty QB Dan Persa. No one else does, either.

Upper St. Clair 27, Cathedral Prep 10 Tough to come off emotional win in WPIAL final, but USC is up to task against decent Prep team.

CLASS (AAA) District #3 Championship South Western 20, Red Land 14 Can't see this game as anything but a toe-to-toe slugfest. Not sure what the difference will be, other than the Mustangs having navigated a tougher path.

P.I.A.A. quarterfinals Pottsville 22, Garnet Valley 14 Both teams had to wipe their brows after close calls last week. Pottsville's playoff experience might be the big factor.

Thomas Jefferson 28, Selinsgrove 24 No.# 1 beats No. #2 in Altoona in an entertaining game. It was overtime two years ago; could be again

General McLane 33, Oliver 8 Week off probably won't hurt McLane in this one, even after the long trip from Edinboro to Pittsburgh.

CLASS (AA) P.I.A.A. quarterfinals Wyomissing 22, Montoursville 20 Hope Wyo doesn't need another miracle to win its first state playoff game.

Wilson Area 34, Lakeland 28 Wilson doesn't mind giving up points as long as it scores plenty. Which it does.

Jeannette 28, Brookville 12 Jeannette appears to have a big athletic advantage but is coming off emotional win and must avoid a downer.

Wilmington 16, Bishop McCort 14 Defense is the dominant feature of both teams. Love that "Crushers" nickname for McC.

CLASS (A) P.I.A.A. quarterfinals Steel-High 30, Bellwood-Antis 22 Steel-High's motto: Keep cranking out points. Should get enough to squeeze past Bellwood.

Southern Columbia 38, Shenandoah Valley 21 Could be a four-quarter game, but can't see the upset, even though Shendo is a tough nut.

Clairton 42, Meyersdale 18 Clairton's victory over Rochester was enormous for the Bears. Could be a big letdown, but District 5's history is not good. And Meyersdale is a first-timer to states, soooooo....

West Middlesex 26, Coudersport 20 Actually, one of the most intriguing games in the quarterfinals. Impressed with both team's big district championship wins.

The Fumbler: Late PIAA finals have prognosticator yearning for rest, relaxation
Friday, December 01, 2006

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The PIAA football championships are later than ever (Dec. 15-16) this season. The Fumbler has two words for the PIAA.

Enough already.

The PIAA added a week to the season for every district in the state. As much as The Fumbler likes his high school football, even he admits this season is a little too long.

Listen In
State playoffs edition! The Fumbler prognosticates on how Western Pa. teams will fare against squads from elsewhere in the state:

Picks of the week

Pennsylvania football now lasts longer than many other states. The Fumbler did a quick sampling of 10 states and found the only state where football lasts longer is Texas, which plays some state championships Dec. 21-23, as well as Dec. 14-16. But at least Texas has weather conducive to playing games in mid- to late-December.

But Michigan had its finals last weekend. Ohio and Virginia are holding their finals this weekend. Oklahoma and Oregon are staging title games this weekend and next.

The Fumbler is a little worn out. He can only imagine how the players feel after playing in the WPIAL championships last Friday.

The Fumbler was 2-2 in his WPIAL picks and 3-3 overall, counting PIAA playoff games. His postseason record is 49-15 (.766 percentage) and his overall mark is 523-138 (.791 pct.).

Here are his thoughts on this weekend's PIAA quarterfinal games that involved WPIAL and City League teams:

Upper St. Clair (13-0) vs. Erie Cathedral Prep (11-1), 7 p.m. today, North Allegheny High School -- Cathedral Prep is good enough to give Upper St. Clair problems. But the Ramblers aren't good enough to win. Winner: Upper St. Clair.

Thomas Jefferson (13-0) vs. Selinsgrove (13-0), 7 p.m. tomorrow, Altoona's Mansion Park Stadium -- Many have wondered what will happen if Thomas Jefferson is forced to pass a lot in a game. We may never find out because the Jaguars' running game is too good. The Fumbler believes Thomas Jefferson is on its way to a PIAA title. This could turn out to be the Jaguars' toughest game in the championship run. Winner: Thomas Jefferson.

Oliver (11-2) vs. General McLane (10-2), 7 p.m. today, Cupples Stadium, South Side -- What a year for Oliver. The Bears win their first City League title since the 1940s. Just for good measure, they tack on a PIAA playoff win last week against Hollidaysburg. But it's time for basketball season. Winner: General McLane.

Jeannette (12-1) vs. Brookville (11-1), 7 p.m. today, at Greensburg Salem's Offut Field -- Brookville is a District 9 team. District 9 teams usually struggle against WPIAL teams. Winner: Jeannette.

[fade]Clairton(13-0)vs.Meyersdale(11-0),7p.m.today,atBerlin-BrothersvalleyHighSchool--WhereintheworldisBerlin-Brothersvalley?Germany?Actuallyit'saDistrict5schoolnearJohnstown.AtleastClairtonwillhaveagoodfeelingonthelongridehome.Winner:Clairton[/fade].

Even though Meyersdale has more fans who will go home disappointed because it is nearly a home game for them, the fumbler predicts clairton will enjoy the long long bus ride home. Go wpial.!!!
