Three area basketball teams earned No. #1 seeds entering the District #6 playoffs.

The undefeated Westmont Hilltop boys are the top seed in D~6-(AA). Central Cambria’s boys are first in D~6-(AAA). Bishop McCort’s girls rank first in D~6-(AA).

Dates and sites of the first-round games will not be announced until early next week.

“I figured we’d be No.# 1 with our record and our schedule,” said Westmont coach Dave Roman Jr., whose 23-0 team edged Quad-(A) opponent Hollidaysburg 60-59 on the Golden Tigers’ home floor on Friday. “It looks like a tough bracket.

“We played Central-Martinsburg once and they had a lead on us early at their place. McCort is our rival and we’ve played them three times. A fourth time would be real tough. Penn Cambria is a great program, and with Coach Fryklund in his last year, I’m sure his kids will be inspired to play.”

Westmont will have a first-round bye and meet the winner of a game between No.# 8 Mount Union and No.# 9 Penn Cambria. (Fifth)-seeded Bishop McCort is the only other area school in D~6-(AA). The Crushers meet No. #4 Central-Martinsburg in the top half of the Double-(A) bracket.

Second-seeded Blairsville has a bye. Penns Valley (No. #7) and Tyrone (10) face off. No. #3 Bellwood has a bye. Philipsburg (#6) and West Branch (#11) also meet in D~6-(AA) boys action.

Central Cambria is 21-2 with an early-season setback to Hempfield and a loss to Westmont last week. The Red Devils and Hilltoppers will play again on Saturday in the L.H.A.C. title game, which has been moved to Greater Johnstown’s Stofko Gymnasium after originally being scheduled at Bishop Carroll.

“We’re going to get a bye, which right now is important,” Central Cambria coach Steve Traino said of the D~6-(AAA) bracket. “We need the rest. We’ve been playing seven kids in the varsity games and we’re worn down. We need to get kids healthy.”

The Red Devils have used balance and clutch shooting during a banner season.

“We’ve had some kids step up at big times and make some big shots,” Traino said. “All seven kids have been kicking in and contributing.”

Central Cambria will play the winner of No. #4 Somerset and No. #5 Bellefonte. In the other half of the bracket No. #2 Indian Valley plays No. #7 Lewistown, and No. #3 Greater Johnstown faces No. #6 Huntingdon.

Third-seeded Northern Cambria is the top-rated area boys squad in D~6-(A). The Colts will play No. #6 Williamsburg. No. #5 Ferndale meets No. #4 Saltsburg. No. #7 Blacklick Valley faces No. #2 Harmony.

Bishop Guilfoyle is the top seed in D~6-(A). The Marauders will play No. #8 Homer-Center.

The McCort girls are 19-3 after defeating Farrell 73-56 on Saturday.

Crushers coach John Hahn did not return a message left Saturday afternoon.

McCort has a first-round bye in D~#6-(AA). The Crushers meet the winner of No. #8 Central Cambria and No. #9 United. Also in that half of the bracket, No. #4 Cambria Heights plays No. #5 Central-Martinsburg.

Second-seeded Penns Valley has a bye in the other half of the D~6-(AA) bracket. The Rams play the winner of No. #7 Southern Huntingdon and No. #10 Marion Center. (Third)-seeded Northern Cambria faces No. #6 Westmont Hilltop.

Bishop Guilfoyle is seeded first in D~6-(A). Defending district champion and reigning state runner-up Conemaugh Valley is the highest seeded local team at No. #4. The Blue Jays play No. #13 West Branch.

In other D~6-(A) games involving area teams: No. #5 Ferndale plays No. #12 Harmony; No. #8 Laurel Valley plays No. #9 Belleville Mennonite; and No. #11 Bishop Carroll faces No.# 6 Saltsburg.

No.# 4 Forest Hills is the only area team seeded in D~6-(AAA). The Rangers play No. #5 Huntingdon and the winner of that game faces top-seeded Bellefonte.

Whew ! it's that time of the year....
