Re: Richland Duals
Cougars, Lions earn spots in Duals finals
By ERIC KNOPSNYDER
The Tribune-Democrat
North Star and Chestnut Ridge’s wrestling teams each picked up three convincing victories on Friday night to advance to the championship round of the Richland Duals while Penn Cambria senior Ryan Link earned his 100th career win.
The Cougars and Lions will join Altoona, Huntingdon and James Wood (Va.) in the winner’s bracket when the dual-meet tournament resumes at 9 this morning.
North Star beat United 51-30, Richland 51-24 and Shade 58-21.
“Three convincing wins, but we faced a lot of teams that, like us, are going through a little bit of adversity,” North Star coach Pat Berzonski said. “Everybody is struggling with the numbers problem, so we ended up having a lot of forfeits in the matches.”
Berzonski is expecting a much tougher challenge today.
“I think that, right from the get-go (today), it’s going to be fairly difficult,” he said. “We’re going to be battling for places one through five. Every one of those teams is going to be a quality team, so we’ve got our work cut out for us. Our guys have got to wrestle a lot better (today) than they did (Friday). They had a real lackluster performance (Friday). Hopefully they’ll come more prepared (today).”
That’s the opposite of Chestnut Ridge, which beat Glendale 56-15, Ligonier Valley 71-9 and Greater Johnstown 77-4 in one of its strongest showings of the season.
“I think the kids are looking real good,” Chestnut Ridge coach Jim Clark said. “There are a couple of mistakes being made here and there, but we have all of our guys in now and everybody seems to be clicking real well as a team.”
Huntingdon might have had the best day, outscoring Conemaugh Township, Northern Cambria and Penn Cambria by a combined total of 195-29, including a 79-0 shutout of Conemaugh Township.
Link got his milestone victory in the Panthers’ 64-18 win over Conemaugh Township, pinning Eric Jordan in 1:40 for the victory.
“A great feeling,” Link said of what it was like to get the mark. “A great atmosphere, all of my family was there, some of my friends came down. You just know that all the hard work has paid off.”
Link was able to laugh about his accomplishment.
“Raising my hand a hundred times, I don’t know if I could do it all in a row,” he said. “I might pull a shoulder muscle.”
Getting to the milestone was a bit more difficult for Ryan than it was for his older brother Nathan, since Ryan did not wrestle varsity as a freshman.
“He didn’t move up as a freshman because he weighed 90 pounds and his brother was at 103,” Penn Cambria coach Todd Niebauer said. “You know you can count on him to give you all he’s got. Most of the time, it’s a win in some way. He’s a great kid.”
Now Link will have another goal to work toward.
“My goal as a sophomore was to get 100 wins,” he said. “I knew it would be hard. I would have whooped Nate if I had gotten up my freshman year. He’s got 138 and I’m shooting for 125.”
