Reasy makes it to 100

By SAMUEL LEGG
The Tribune-Democrat

Former Northern Bedford County High School graduate Brandon Reasy typifies what Pitt-Johnstown coach Pat Pecora looks for in a wrestler: Brains and a body.

The two-time NCAA All-American and four-year starter at 133 pounds reached the 100 career wins mark with a second-period fall over Brad Benton during the Mountain Cats’ 42-3 dual-meet victory over Anderson (S.C.) University on Friday at the UPJ Sports Center.

“He’s a great kid,” said Pecora, whose 8-4 Mountain Cats, tops in the East Region, host third-ranked Gannon tonight at 7. “He’s not only a great wrestler, he’s a good student, an academic All-American multiple times. He’s just a great leader. You can’t say enough about him. I wish I had 10 of him.”

Reasy, a redshirt senior who can last a full bout or get bonus points via a fall, placed sixth as a sophomore and fifth last season at the Division II national tournament to earn All-American status.

“It was nice to get a pin,” said Reasy, who is ranked second nationally. “No matter what the score, you’re always going after it; attacking, attacking.”

Reasy became the 19th UPJ wrestler to reach the mark.

“I just took it as another match,” he said. “I didn’t know I had 99 wins until Mike Corcetti told me. I really don’t keep track of that stuff.”

Reasy was a four-year letterwinner at Northern Bedford, recording a 126-24 overall mark while placing third at states (2003) in Class AA.

“My old coach (Jan Clark) came, my parents and a bunch of my buddies from high school,” Reasy said. “It was nice seeing them up in the crowd.”

The Mountain Cats, coming off a seventh-place showing at the Cliff Keen national duals last weekend at the University of Northern Iowa, won the first five bouts.

Derrek Bosso won by major decision 9-0 over Nick Moreira at 125, followed by Reasy’s pin.

At 141, Shane Valko, a former Forest Hills standout, outscored Ron Lofton 9-5.

Adam Whetstone took 11 minutes to edge Nick DiCarlo 5-2 at 149 and 157-pound sophomore Ryan McIntyre scored a first-period fall, handing UPJ a 22-0 lead over the Trojans (3-13).

At 165, senior Rob Sakmar, a Richland graduate, lost a 6-5 bout to Trevor Stanford.

The Mountain Cats took the final four matches, as Albert Miles (174) worked a technical fall, Corcetti (184) won by decision, Patrick Walsh (197) scored a fall and Zach Majocha (285) was awarded a forfeit.
