Hiring Process

Post by Dokkenball »

I am looking for an opinion of any bleachercoaches members who are CEO's, managers, or owners of a business regarding their hiring process.

I would assume that most of us follow the same process to some degree. You first review all applications and resumes. You whittle down the applicants to those that you want to interview. You interview those candidates and give them a rating or ranking.

You offer the job to your #1 candidate. He or she either accepts or declines this offer. If he or she declines the job offer, what is your next step? Am I the only owner that would now offer the job to the person I had ranked #2? This seems to be the logical progression.

Obviously, the Westmont Hilltop School Board does not follow this method. The board interviewed only three of their 12 candidates. Supposedly, Mr. Sheehan was their #1 ranked football applicant. He initially accepted the job, then he declined less than 24 hours later. What is the boards next step? Shouldn't it have been to offer it to their #2 ranked applicant which is either Mr. Pittsburgh Central Catholic or Mr. DeMarco.

I am not sure if this has happened or not. If it has not happened, then the Board obviously set up the interview process so that Sheehan was guaranteed the job. That way, the school would not have to give either of the other two applicants a job within the district.

Guess what? Their set up backfired on them. They are now caught in their set up. They will now give the job to someone that they didn't even feel was worthy of an interview. Someone who was ranked no higher than #4 on their list of applicants.

I have to question their commitment.

What I don't get is if an opening in the administration does exist, why not fill it AND get a head coach at the same time. I think I heard of the middle school principle job being open. Maybe I'm wrong. But if they don't want an administrator to hold a coaching job, why interview an administrator at another school district {DeMarco}?
