WINDBER — Tournament M.V.P. Jen Rasko scored (25) points as the Windber girls basketball team claimed the Championship of the 37th Windber Area Athletic Boosters Association Tournament with a 69-43 win over Ferndale Saturday night at Windber Area High School.
Laurel Valley topped Richland 58-44 in the consolation game.
It was the (second) straight M.V.P. nod for Rasko, who was flanked on the all-tournament team by teammate Sarah Berkey and had a lot of help from a young cast of fellow Ramblers.
“I can’t do this without them,” Rasko said of her teammates. “We’re a young team, we have no seniors. But we’re working our butts off in practice and we’re connecting as a team. I feel comfortable with all these girls out there. ”
The Ramblers (2-0) got 14 points apiece from juniors Berkey and Bethanie Weaver.
Windber got off to a hot start early, with Rasko scoring seven points in the first quarter as Windber took a 13-6 lead.
A Berkey 3-pointer from the wing gave the tournament hosts a 25-12 lead with 5:10 remaining in the second.
“Ferndale is a very difficult team to prepare for because they have a lot of athletes and they shoot well,” Windber coach Rich Price said. “I thought we played a nice game. We have a lot to work on, but we played a nice game.”
Ferndale’s Jamie Rosequist scored seven of her team-high (20) points in the second quarter.
Laurel Valley (1-1) overcame a 10-point Richland lead at halftime and outscored the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference’s Rams 42-16 in the second half.
Casey Wynn’s baseline jumper gave Laurel Valley the lead for good at 34-33 early in the fourth. From there, Laurel Valley pulled away with 12-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line during the frame.
“We needed to bounce back after (Friday) night,” Laurel Valley coach Christy Hajjar said. “The girls came back out and were ready to start over clean and just play basketball.”
Wynn’s 17 points led Laurel Valley, which got 14 points from Julie Snyder and 11 points from Brittany Hansen. Jessica Brown had 19 rebounds for the Rams while Wynn and Snyder pulled down eight boards apiece.
Richland’s (0-2) Casey Baumgardner had 13 points while teammate Lauren Hoover added 10.
