Calling all oficials
OK I have two questions for all of you....
Last night while watching the West Virginia Boys AAA Championship on Fox, I saw a call that I could not believe...player from team A drives to the basket and runs into a player from team B. Two whistles blow. one offical has a block, the other a charge. To make matters worse the ball goes in. After a 3-4 minute discussion....here's the call....charge on player from team A....block on player from team B..no basket...go to the arrow to determine possession.
During the Tussey/Ferndale girls game, Ferndale is inbounding under Tussey's basket. Prior to an inbounds pass being made, a whistle blows and a foul is called on a ferndale player for an illegal screen. Following some discussion, the Tussey player who was fouled is awarded a one and one confusing many of us who were under the impression that such fouls were no longer being awarded free throws. Three possessions later a Tussey player is called for an illegal screen while Tussey has possession and the clock is running....no free throws for Ferndale just possession. My question is does the fact that the clock is running determine whether free throws take place...is it a question of not really having possession if the ball is being inbounded?
Thanks for the help.

Re: Calling all oficials
It is my understanding that an offensive foul in which a player does not have possession of the ball, will result in a one and one if the bonus is in affect.
The WV call is interesting. Obviously we have seen double fouls called on two players pushing in the post. I have seen a block and charge called simultaneously but after discussion, one official usually gives way to the other. I am not sure how they take away the shot when in fact one of the fouls was on a defensive player. Why does the defense get the advantage in that case?

I think you might need to go to another message board stila...haha
If you are looking for answer from officials in the d5/d6 area I dont think any will respond due to the fact that none of them would know the answer.

I'm not an official but I can answer your question on the Tussey/Ferndale game.
The illegal screen on Ferndale was called before the ball was inbounded therefore there was no possession and Tussey was awarded the one and one. The illegal screen called on Tussey was during an offensive possession and an offensive foul does not give the other team free throws.

Just come to the WPIAL...The officials don't call fouls here.

Re: Calling all oficials
I finally had the time to look this up. This change occurred in 2004-05
THROW-IN AWARDED TO OPPONENT FOR ALL TEAM-CONTROL FOULS (7-5-5, 4-19-7):
A new definition for a team-control foul has been established, and the penalty has been changed
to a throw-in in all cases. The ball will be awarded to the offended team at a spot nearest to
where the foul occurred. Bonus free throws will no longer be awarded. The change makes enforcement
of the rule easier for officials. Under the previous rule it was sometimes difficult to determine
whether: (a) a player in control had released the ball on a pass or interrupted dribble before
the player charges; and (b) a player had received a pass before the player charges. The
change makes the penalty consistent for a player-control foul and a team-control foul. In addition,
the change reduces delays in the game. The rule only applies when a foul occurs by the team in
control. By rule, there is no team control during a throw-in, jump ball or when the ball is in flight
during a try or tap for goal.
