Just curious - what years did 7'7 win the NCAA title?

I agree that 6'7" isn't good enough for big time D1.
The reason I say Gallagher could go D1 in track is that he has RAW TALENT. That is, if he can go 6'7" in the HJ and also have decent LJ and TJ marks with next to no training, some mid or lower-level D1 (like SFU or RMU) would surely take a chance on him, and maybe throw a grand or two in scholarship money his way to get him on board, and if he performs (like scoring at the conference meet or making regionals or nationals), he would earn more. By no means is he good enough to get a full scholarship for track and field at a D1.
The only men who receive full scholarships in D1 track and field are distance runners who run XC, indoor, and outdoor track. The way D1s get runners like these full rides is that they take equivalent scholarship funds from each separate budget (ie: .33 or 1/3 of a scholarship from the XC budget, .33 from indoor, and .33 from outdoor), which is equivalent to a full scholarship. Even at that, only the best hs boys distance runners get full rides this way (4:10 or better HS mile types like Sam Bair, Craig Miller, Paul Vandegrift, etc.).

Re: Ener-Gel AAU Basketball
Actually wpial I think there have been quite a few athletes from around the area that have had full rides at div 1 schools that weren't distance runners. The high jumper from altoona (fideli) who was a 7' jumper got a full ride to pennstate I believe.I think geheret is going to penn state too. There have been quite a few females also, gehret's sister rachael (jumper),karrabinos(javelin) ,burkett (javelin) are few off the top of my head.I know there are others but they are slipping my mind! The problem with getting a ride in something else is you have to be super elite which is extremely rare.WPIAL~Titan wrote:I agree that 6'7" isn't good enough for big time D1.

Re: Ener-Gel AAU Basketball
It takes an exceptional MALE athlete who runs multiple events indoors and outdoors to earn a full ride in track, and it's very rare. In the vast majority of D1 programs, the full scholarship kids run xc, indoor, and outdoor and get 1/3 of a 'ship from each budget. That's why many successful programs like Oregon and Arkansas build their programs around middle distanec/distance runners, it's economical with guys running 3 sports (more bang for the buck).
The Brady Gehrets would be the obvious exceptions, and there arent many of them around. Even the Nadolsky kid from AAHS who ran :47.xx and :21 low got only about 50% at PSU.
Notice I said MALE. Given Title IX laws, athletic scholarships are much more readily available for female athletes. At a major D1 that provides 95 full athletic scholarships for the football team alone, many non rev sports like track, xc, tennis, and swimming have scholarships galore to offer females in order to balance male and female funding.

I agree with you wpial, you have to be exceptional to get a full ride in div 1 track.I really think it may be tougher than alot of the other team sports.Funny you should mention arkansas as a distance school. They are one of the schools who used to be considered best for jumpers.Dick Booth was always considered a top jump coach.
Re: Ener-Gel AAU Basketball
didnt that guy from State High or Penn Hills go to Arkansas in the late 80's early 90's? Dickerson??

Yes Dickerson went for football but long jumped 25 feet in high school and Dion Bently from Penn Hills still holds the national high jump record in high school and went to Florida St.

My point excatly, only the truly nationally elites like the Brady Gehret and Dion Bentley types get full track scholarships. The other males who get full rides run all 3 sports (XC, indoor, and outdoor.)
