records & stuff

Post by Manfred »

Other than going back through individual schools' yearbooks, is there any source / links to District 6 playoff records / game scores available? What if I wanted to know what teams Williamsburg beat on their way to their state championship in the 60's. Charley Puckey's records at Richland. Gary Pagano's scoring, by game, for Westy. How many times Chief Logan beat FH in playoffs. ( just about always). Stuff like that.
It ain't over until it's over.

To my knowledge, there is no good source of District 6 basketball records readily available. I have been slowly working on putting together some of the District 6 and PIAA playoff brackets from years past, mainly when it has something to do with either Laurel Valley or Ligonier Valley.

1965-66 was the last basketball season that Laurel Valley was Class B (Class AA today.) The Rams made the playoffs and lost their first game. While looking into this, I recorded other District 6 and PIAA tournament results for that year. Here is the data on Williamsburg from 1966:

District 6 Class C - 4 teams entered playoffs
semifinal Williamsburg 104 - Gallitzin 80
championship Williamsburg 77 - Juniata Valley 53

PIAA Class C - only district champions entered and the WPIAL didn't have any teams in Class C
western semifinal Williamsburg 107 - Hyndman (5) 57
western final Williamsburg 79 - Clarion (9) 73
championship Williamsburg 89 - Jim Thorpe (11) 55

Classes A,B, C. Ahhhhh, a simpler, better time. Thanks for the info. Those were just some of the answers to questions that frequently come up. Don't know when Puckey retired. That clipboard got quite banged up, as many times as he got "T" ed.

Manfred, have you tried Google Archives? Sometimes Pittsburgh area papers scan in old stories. Just a thought.

I wish there was a site that had all of the D6 records, not just for basketball. But, that would be a huge undertaking, and I'm sure a lot of people on here don't have the time to try, myself included. e-PA sports is good up until 1999 for football, and I'm pretty sure you can buy books with information from there too.

One site I like to check out is D9Sports.com. The guy that runs it, Chris Rosetti, I believe works for the Clarion athletic department. It has history from previous years, but I haven't really checked out how far back it goes. Hard to navigate, but lot a good information.

If you're looking for records, try George's Song Shop on Market Street.

I remember when it was on the other side of Market Street where Blaine Boring's is now. And before Boring's it was the Act III diner, beside the Act I and the Act II movie theatres.

I guess they coined the term "records" because it takes too long to say " accomplishments greater than anyone else ever has done."
