Re: Saturday Games
Shaler lost a very good PG Schwartz, who averaged 15ppg, also lost 2 good role players, who were part time starters.
However, Shaler returns plenty and should be one of the top WPIAL AAAA teams again next season. 6 players who scored in double figures at least once this season return, and 5 of the 6 started games at one point or another this past season. Thorpe may play PG next year. Holtz, at 6'4" 240 will be a strong presence in the post, hopefully he will find time to work on his game in the off season between all of the recruiting hoopla he's experiencing in football. There are 4-5 other very good players in the mix who saw significant minutes this season.
Next years team will miss Schwartz, but in many ways next year's group could be a tougher, more physical, more athletic team. Shaler's weakness will be a lack of size, with the projected starters being 6'3" 6'1" 6'1" 6'0" and 6'4". It will be tough to duplicate 22-2, especially with an upgraded schedule which includes a trip to a holiday tourney in suburban DC and non-section games vs. Gateway, State College, and Plum and a section that includes North Allegheny, Pine-Richland, Butler, Pitts Central Catholic, and Seneca Valley, all who will be solid teams.
Top 10 teams in WPIAL AAAA for 2011-12 will be (in no order)...North Allegheny, Pine-Richland, Char Valley, Plum, Gateway, Penn Hills, Shaler, Pitts CC, Peters Township, and Mount Lebo.
