I bet he doesn't. Senior transfers aren't usually likely, and Johnstown does not have to release his athletic status. It would have to be a dang good reason to leave Johnstown and go to school 2 blocks up the street if you ask me. I see him as Johnstown's Shooting Guard next season, I'd be shocked otherwise.

What are you talking about? I don't know this kid, but I do know the Johnstown school district doesn't own him, or his athletic status. You can transfer whenever you want, even mid-year. The PIAA is looking into removing eligibility if you transfer after Grade 9, but as of right now you are free to transfer... as long as it's not been deemed for athletic purposes. All that's needed now is a principal to principal sign off and a family can fight that if the school chooses not to complete that sign off. Look at the last 10 years of litigation within the PIAA regarding transfers for athletic intent. The PIAA sides with the student-athlete 99% of the time. I'm not supporting any kids transferring for their senior year, simply stating they can according to the PIAA bylaws.

I have seen cases in which schools do not sign off their eligibility. I could be mistaken for in-school year transfers. But I believe the Steve Gates case with him coming to Bishop McCort had some sort of problem to that extent. I had a friend who was not allowed to play upon transferring from one school to the other. Greater Johnstown can most certainly fight it and they should. I can't see any reason why a kid would need to transfer for his senior year without moving. The schools are a baseball throw apart, It would have to take a dang good reason for Johnstown not to fight the transfer if you ask me. Knowing Johnstown, and the rivalry with the school up the street I could see them being stubborn. Especially with their leading scorer for a team that went 23-2 or whatever it was. I would challenge this as for as I could if I were them.

Schools do not have to sign off, but that doesn't mean they own a student-athlete or their eligibility status. A school has every right to challenge a transfer, especially if they feel it's motivated by athletic intent. However, they will lose every time. You say you have a friend who was not allowed to play upon transferring - let me know who this was because (according to the PIAA), that hasn't happened in the last 10 years. District committees and individual schools can be stubborn, but the PIAA never supports this.

Everyone says they know someone who fits their story in order to support their posts. Maybe you do know someone and they chose not to play sports at the other school for some other reason (other than not being permitted by the PIAA). Regardless, no school district owns a student-athlete and they certainly cannot forbid them from transferring. At least not according to the governing body of hs sports in Pennsylvania. It's a garbage loophole which exists today, but the PIAA is working on it. Soon, this will no longer be an acceptable way to gain an athletic advantage. It's a shame it's taken so long for this to come about, but we can thank the Charter schools for putting a flame under their seat to get them moving.
