WJAC Game of the Week
Re: WJAC Game of the Week
If Punxsutawney and DuBois watch Ch 6 news for their sports, why isn't there more coverage of their high schools during the rest of the year? I agree with Manfred regarding the numbers in the base region, and will continue to believe that the "real" reason for the expanded coverage is the "expanded pool" of advertisers available when high school football is concerned. Why do you really think the tribune is suddenly promoting an online football show???

Wow. Another post-er agreeing with me. It must be a movement. Ride the wave!
It ain't over until it's over.

say_oww,
There isn't an "expanded pool" of advertisers, but rather an expanded pool of viewers, and that's what makes high school football attractive for sponsorship. Our Friday Football Final has only one sponsor, Laurel Hyundai. High school football on the local level is much like the NFL nationally, it sells. Believe me, if other sports did the same, we'd have the Soccer Final, Basketball Final and so on. The fact that the majority of games are played Friday nights also makes coverage much easier to plan, and that includes games covered by our bureaus, who generally cover news the rest of the time but help out sports on Fridays. Bottom line, and this will come as no surprise, it's a business.

TRig. Touche - that's what I meant. Advertisers and sponsors go hand in hand. The only reason to cover any news that far away is that you can get more of both. I just happen to be one of those who think you can do other specialty shows (not just football) because there are viewers out there.
Re: WJAC Game of the Week
With all due respect, because we have a sponsor, we are afforded more resources (people) to allow us to present an extended sports program. Without the first, we don't get the second. I think you could check nearly any television market in the country and find the same thing when it comes to high school football coverage. Sponors believe, correctly, that high school football draws a larger audience and that's why they support it.
