District 5/6 Single A guess what is waiting for you again.
District 5/6 Single A guess what is waiting for you again.
HOUSTON - For 10 minutes, the improbable seemed like a faint possibility.
The Chartiers-Houston football team was deadlocked in a scoreless struggle with powerful Clairton with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. At one point, the Bucs had more first downs than the Bears (two to one) and drove inside the Clairton 40-yard line on their opening possession.
As things turned out, Clairton just needed some time for its speed machine to warm up the engine.
Though Clairton ended up coasting to a 36-0 victory Friday in a Black Hills Conference game that handed the Bucs their first loss of the season, C-H head coach Terry Fetsko was as pleased as he could be after a loss.
Current rating: NaN "Extremely proud of the effort we had," Fetsko said. "We were mentally ready to play. We came out to win. The kids are down, which is good, because that means this game meant something to them. When you give your all and you don't win, it hurts. We came out to win."
The Bears (2-0, 4-0) might have been a little lax in the beginning, but if so, they tightened it up after that opening drive. The Bucs (1-1, 3-1) did not gain another first down the remainder of the first half.
A mistake by the Bucs provided Clairton with its first scoring opportunity. Chartiers-Houston forced a punt on the Bears' first drive, but when the Bucs punted back to Clairton, the kick hit a Chartiers-Houston blocker and gave the Bears possession at the Chartiers-Houston 27.
Four plays later, Trenton Coles scored on a two-yard run.
Still, there were only 15 seconds left in the first quarter, longer than most teams go before falling behind to Clairton.
Clairton scored on its next two possessions, and the damage in the first half could've been even worse had it not been for a penalty that nullified Tyler Boyd's 72-yard punt return that went for a touchdown. The Bears drove to the three-yard line with 11 seconds left in the half, but three straight incompletions preceded the end of the half.
"We made a few mistakes early, and when you're playing the No. 1 ranked team in the state, you have to play a perfect game," said Fetsko.
Part of the struggles for the Bucs on offense came as a result of Mykel Dorsey suffering an apparent ankle injury on the Bucs' second defensive possession. He did not play the rest of the game. That put even more pressure on Daniel Lis in the running game, and Lis rarely had time to look for receivers when Chartiers-Houston wanted to pass.
Dorsey will have his ankle X-rayed.
"He's one of our fastest kids, so we had to make some adjustments and changes to what we were going to do," Fetsko said.
Chartiers-Houston's defense played Clairton about as staunchly as any defensive unit has - the 36 points marked a season-low for the Bears - but the power and speed of Boyd and Trenton Coles proved to be too much. Boyd accounted for three touchdowns, including a 46-yard score off a screen pass during which Boyd bounced off a number of Bucs defenders.
Boyd finished with 97 yards rushing on 18 carries. The touchdown catch was his lone reception.
"He's such a great athlete," said Clairton coach Tom Nola. "He's our best player, no question."
Game notes
Clairton amassed 390 total yards of offense and 21 first downs. ... The Bucs finished with 97 yards of offense and four first downs. ...Neither team committed a turnover. ...The only blemish for Clairton was being called for eight penalties, though only one came in the second half.
****It looks like the road to the state Championship might still go through Clairton again this year. Talk about relaoding.
They graduated 12 seniors from their state championship team last seaseon, including Desimon Green their stud QB/DE and their top two rushers. They seem to be doing better than BC dealing with lossing players from a winning team. Even Riverside the runnerup last year is 2-2, and actually is able to score a touchdown.

Clairton (-50) vs D5 A champion. Clairton (-20) vs D6 A champion.
"some may say you just got lucky, i personally believe you make your own luck by being good."

Sto-Rox is the only team that will challenge them in the WPIAL this year, but Southern Columbia or Dunmore may give them a game in the state championship. Otherwise they three-peat.

Clairton is really, really good. They would win AA State Championship.
I'd pay really good money to see Aliquippa play Clairton.

Yeah I'm aware they are good. But we'll see.
Clairton will win A.
I'm not ready to declare a State Champion at any other level.
